  1. Food Chain, Food Web – Difference between food chain and food web – Class 10 takshilalearning.com/food-chain-food-web-difference-between-food-chain-and-food-web-class-10/ September 6, 2021 What is a food chain? A food chain is a linear arrangement or sequence of organisms capable of feeding on each other, allowing essential nutrients and energy to flow from one organism to another. Imagine you ate a vegetable sandwich for breakfast, and then your food chain would be: Tomato/onion/spinach -> Man But when you eat a hamburger for your breakfast instead, the food chain in this state will be: Grass → Cow → Man Food chain definition 1/6

  2. A food chain refers to the sequence of events in an ecosystem where an organism eats another organism. The second organism gets eaten by a third organism, and the event continues. The flow of nutrients and energy from one organism to another at different trophic levels becomes a food chain. The energy radiated through this network does not create or destroy existing energy. Instead, it flows from one level to another through different organisms in the community consisting of producers, consumers, and decomposers. Producers include all autotrophs such as phytoplankton, cyanobacteria, algae, green plants. They come first in a food chain. They primarily depend on the energy of the Sun to make food. Eg – Photosynthesis. Consumers include organisms that are dependent on producers in the food chain. They make up most of the food web since it includes almost all living organisms. Consumers can be at several levels. Herbivores are mostly the first consumer. Carnivores become the second consumer as they feed on herbivores. Decomposers are organisms that get energy from dead or waste organic material. What are the types of food chains? There are two types of food chains known as detritus food chain and meat food chain. Let’s look at them in detail: Detritus Food Chain The Detritus food chain consists of dead organic matter. These include organisms and plants that are producers in the food chain. In this food chain, decomposers and detoxifiers decompose on dead organisms from plants and animals. Carnivores feed on such dead beings. Frogs and snakes are examples of carnivores, while fungicides are fungi, bacteria or protozoa. Grazing food chain 2/6

  3. The grazing food chains are ones wherein the producers get their energy via photosynthesis. Therefore, the producers are typically autotrophs consisting of green plants. The energy passes through producers to herbivores and then to carnivores. What is Food Web? Food web definition The complex organization of organisms in the ecosystem results in interconnected food networks. Whenever there are many chains connected, they form a food web. A food web represents the flow of energy and the energy that any organism in the habitat uses extensively. A food web is similar to a food chain, but the food web is relatively broader than a food chain. Often, many hunters eat one organism, or multiple hunters eat a single organism. Because of this, many trophic levels get interconnected. In this case, a food web would be a better solution for interpreting the food flow. But it would not show the precise energy flow since the food chain fails to reflect the chain flow properly for more than one organism as the feeder. However, the food web can show a reasonable representation of web energy flow because it shows interactions between various organisms. As there is more interaction between different food chains, the food web becomes more complex. This complexity in a food web leads to a more sustainable habitat. 3/6

  4. What is the difference between a food chain and a food web? ON THE BASIS OF FOOD CHAIN FOOD WEB Meaning It is the flow of energy from a low trophic level to a high level in a single straight path. These are several connected food chains through which energy flows in the habitat. Composition It contains a straight chain. It contains various interconnected food chains. Energy Flow There is only a linear route of energy and nutrient flow. There are multiple interconnected pathways through which nutrients and energy flow. Stability This is increasing as the number of isolated and limited food chains is increasing. It grows because of its complex food chains. Trophic Level Collects 4-6 trophic levels of different species. It is a collection of different trophic levels of various species. Feeding Relationship Members at high trophic levels eat organisms similar to those at lower trophic levels. High trophic level members feed on different types of organisms at low trophic levels. Disturbance If only one group of organisms is disturbed, the entire network will be affected. If a group of organisms gets removed, it will not affect the food web. Dependency Typically, a member at a high trophic level depends on an organism at the same or lower trophic level. In the food web, members at high trophic levels depend on or feed on various organisms at low trophic levels. Examples Grazing food chain and detritus food chain. No type. FAQs 4/6

  5. 1. Who is the producer, consumer, and decomposer in the following food chain? Tree -> Grasshopper -> Crows -> Insects Ans. – Tree – Producer Grasshopper – First Consumer Crows – Second Consumer Insects – Decomposer 2. If you eat chicken, what would you consider yourself in the food chain? Ans. – Consumer 3. What are the types of food chains? Ans. – Detritus Food Chain – The Detritus food chain consists of dead organic matter. These include organisms and plants that are producers in the food chain. Grazing food chain – The grazing food chains are ones wherein the producers get their energy via photosynthesis. 4. Differentiate between food chain and food web-based on energy flow. Ans.- Food Chain:- There is only a linear route of energy and nutrient flow. Food Web:- There are multiple interconnected pathways through which nutrients and energy flow. 5. Explain decomposers and consumers. Ans.- Decomposers – Decomposers are organisms that get energy from dead or waste organic material. Consumers – They include organisms that are dependent on producers in the food chain. They make up most of the food web since it involves almost all living organisms.
