But have you ever thought about how does your computer lets you do all that on one screen? Let me tell you! A desktop is a term commonly used to describe a system unit or a desktop computer. Basic components of computer What are the components of a computer? MAIN COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER The desktop components can be split into 2 categories – 1/5
1. Hardware – The hardware includes all the things you can touch that help you start your computer. 2. Software – The software includes the things you see on your desktop screen once you start your computer. Let’s first understand how the hardware helps you start your computer desktop. Physical components of a computer HARDWARE COMPONENTS – PHYSICAL COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER All the devices that you can touch and feel in your computer system are called the hardware components. The hardware components are split into 2 categories – Input Devices Output Devices Let’s understand input and output devices with an example. Consider this, when you want to know about something or want to find something, you talk to your mommy telling her what you want. She listens to you and then gives you her suggestions and helps you with what you want. Similarly, in a computer system, the user (you) sends data to the computer system (mommy) by using input devices (similar to how you talked to mommy). The computer system processes what you want (similar to how mommy listened to you) and then gives it back to you with proper results (similar to how mommy gave you her suggestion). Input Devices Input devices are those devices that send data to the computer desktop for processing. Examples include the keyboard (to enter data), mouse (to control the pointer on your desktop screen), joystick (to move an object around on your desktop screen, majorly for gaming), scanner (To send images), microphone (to send voice), webcam (to send videos). Output devices 2/5
Output devices are those devices that provide the user with the results after data processing. Examples include desktop screens or monitors (displays text, images, videos), speakers (plays audio from a computer system), printers (generates text or images from computer system to a paper). Now that we know the hardware components of a computer, let’s understand the software. SOFTWARE COMPONENTS Software is a set of instructions that are required for processing data. Software components are items that help in the processing of data. The main desktop components are: Application software Application software is applications that you get and can download on your computer system to operate your system more efficiently. Examples include Microsoft Office, Web browsers, etc. System software System software is designed to run a computer system’s hardware and application software. Examples include language translators, operating systems, etc. Since we understand how hardware and software components interact, let’s get to the last part of this reading and understand our desktop screens. DESKTOP SCREEN The desktop screen is the most accessible part of the computer system since users primarily focus their attention on the screen. The desktop screen lets users navigate through the computer system. Components of Desktop screens 3/5
1. My computer – My computer is a folder on the desktop that lets users access local drives (Eg – C Drive) and external drives (Eg – Pen drives and hard disk). My computer lets users easily access all folders in the computer system and serves as a pathway for all data in the system. 2. Recycle Bin – Recycle bin a folder on the desktop that stores all deleted items until they are permanently deleted. Until the items are permanently deleted, those items can be easily recovered from the recycle bin. 3. Start button – The Start button lets users access computer programs and applications. The start button is typically located on the bottom left corner of the screen. By clicking on the start menu, the Start bar launches and shows you all the applications that have been installed in the system. 4. Task Bar – The taskbar is a horizontal/vertical pane that shows applications that are currently open in the system or the favourite applications that a user can choose to pin on the taskbar if they are frequently used. Now that we know all about how our computer systems work, let’s play all kinds of games, listen to all types of music, attend all classes, watch all kinds of movies. But let’s also think about what is an input, what is the output, and what goes where on our desktop screens!
