These basic operations are the fundamentals of the entire mathematical system as they help us play with numbers. There is no mathematics without basic operations. Thus it is necessary to understand and have a deep understanding of these basic concepts as their use is seen in everyday life too. Therefore, we should try to master these operations with frequent practising so we can strengthen our grasp on maths. What is division? Division in basic terms means breaking or distributing a number into multiple equal parts. Let’s understand with an easy example – Imagine your teacher is distributing 20 chocolates in a class of 10 students. To completely distribute the chocolates, your teacher would give each student 2 chocolates. In this example – 20 is called the dividend. 10 is called the divisor. 2 is called the quotient. 0 is called the remainder as there were 0 chocolates remaining with the teacher after distributing all the chocolates. In the above example, 5 is the divisor that will divide the number 10 into multiple equal parts. Let’s see how we can write it is as a mathematical equation – 10 ÷ 5 Whenever we have to write the divisor, it always comes after the division symbol (÷) or after the number to be divided. What is a dividend? It is the number you are dividing. For example, 10 divided by 5. In the above example, 5 is the divisor that will divide the number 10 into 2 equal parts. Thus 10 is the dividend. The number of parts that a number can get divided into by another number is called the quotient. For example, 10 ÷ 5= 2 The quotient is 2 in the above example. From the above equation, we can deduce that if the number 10 is divided by 5, then it will be divided into 2 equal parts. What is a remainder? The part left after dividing the number equally with another number is called the remainder. For example, if you have six chocolates that are to be divided equally among five friends, you would give everyone one chocolate each and then you will have one chocolate left.
