Coming into force in May 2018, the EUu2019s General Data Protection Regulation gives people more control over their own data and penalises companies who misuse it for profit. 2. 4/12/2019 GDPR Data Protection Course - One Education 25 STUDENTS ENROLLED Introduction The rise of smartphones and social media over the past 15 years has led to many of us worrying about our data privacy. Until recently, the government was stuck with legislation from the mid-90s, wholly un?t to deal with the challenges of modern life. But GDPR has changed all of that. Coming into force in May 2018, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation gives people more control over their own data and penalises companies who misuse it for pro?t. If your business breaches GDPR, you may be looking at a ?ne of up to 4% of your annual global turnover, or €20 million – whichever is greater. Description The bene?ts of the act are obvious. Businesses are estimated to save billions due to the simpler laws, and the EU hopes that giving people more control over their information will lead to more trust in technology companies and the digital economy as a whole. But what impact will Brexit have on GDPR? A surprisingly small one. Although Britain is still negotiating its exit from the EU, it’s already passed an almost identical version of GDPR, called the Data Protection Act. So regardless of how we leave, the law won’t change. GDPR applies to every business dealing with the data of EU subjects, even if they are based outside of the EU itself, so it’s essential you learn how to stay on the right side of this new law.
