Designing Professional Learning for Your School or School System

Purpose of session -
  • Explore effective and efficient ways to implement professional learning
  • Consider ways to evaluate and determine professional learning needs
  • Learn the guidelines and procedures for developing, implementing and documenting professional learning activities for PLU approval
first of all what do i need to do for teachers to earn plus for professional learning activities
First of all, what do I need to do for teachers to earn PLUs for professional learning activities?
  • Review the DOE website for links and downloads for checklists, plans and approval process
  • GaDOE Web Site

School System Requirements
  • Submit a Professional Learning Plan
  • Revise the plan yearly and submit to DOE
  • Professional Learning for 3 years should be included in CSIP
  • Establish a professional learning advisory council to meet at minimum 3 times yearly
  • Maintain records of addendum or “snap on” for each PLU activity
  • Develop Prior Approval form and ways to evaluate
  • Annual report submitted to DOE (July)
  • Ensure that PL activities are related to CSIP
  • Maintain PLU records a minimum of five years – Pioneer RESA prefers six

Local School Requirements
  • Ensure that PL activities are included in SIP
  • When offering job-embedded professional learning, addendum or “snap on” must be submitted to LEA 3 weeks prior (forms vary by system)
  • PLU proposal goes before Advisory Council
  • 1 PLU = 10 contact hours; no more than 8 hours in one day
  • Prior Approval submission
  • Verification – whether on-the-job or mastery – must be documented
  • No “partial” PLU credit
  • Items needed are – sign-in sheets, agenda, outline, roster

  • Change your practice
  • Gain and share expertise
