  1. Converting Measurements PSSA Practice

  2. PA Standards: 8.1.1.1 Converting among metric measurements (milli, centi, kilo using meter, liter, and gram). 8.1.1.2 Convert customary measurments up to 2 units above or below the given unit (eg. to yards, pints to gallon) 8.1.1.3 Convert time to up to 2 units above or below given unit (eg. secondes to hours). 8.1.1.4 Convert from Fahrenheit or Celsius to Fahrenheit.

  3. Conversion Rules: 1. When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply. x centi milli hecto deca (base) kilo deci ¸ 2. When converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide.

  4. Equivalencies: 1 km = 1000 meters 1 hm = 100 meters 1 dam = 10 meters 1 meter 1 dm = 0.1 meter 1 cm = 0.01 meter 1 mm = 0.001 meter 0.001 km = 1 meter 0.01 hm - 1 meter 0.1 dam = 1 meter 1 meter 10 dm = 1 meter 100 cm = 1 meter 1000 mm = 1 meter 10 mm = 1 cm; 100 cm = 1 meter; 1000 mm = 1 meter

  5. Using the "T" Method How many cups are in 3 gallons? Goal Given First draw a straight line and put the given information from the problem on the left hand side. Second, use the reference page to find equivalencies that will get you to your goal unit. Third, make sure like units are opposite each other in the "t" chart so they cancel each other out. 3 gallons cups Finally, multiply the numbers on top together and divide the answer by the product of the numbers on the bottom.

  6. Example 1 - Xavier's water bottle holds 1250 mL. How many liters does it hold? What is the problem asking you to do? What strategy would you use to solve the problem? Decide on a process. Perform the process.

  7. Xavier's water bottle holds 1250 mL. How many liters does it hold? What is the problem asking you to do? Convert milliliters to liters. Strategy: What is the equivalency between milliliters and liters? Step 1: Step 2: Decide if you should multiply or divide. Divide. Step 3: Solution:

  8. Example 2 - The deck in Kevin's house is 2 yards wide. How many inches wide is the deck? What is the problem asking you to do? What strategy would you use to solve the problem? Decide on a process. Perform the process.

  9. The deck in Kevin's house is 2 yards wide. How many inches wide is the deck? Strategy: Convert yards to feet, then convert feet to inches. Convert 2 yards to feet. Step 1: Convert 6 feet to inches. Step 2: Solution: The deck is 72 inches wide.

  10. 12 11 1 10 2 Converting Units of Time 9 3 8 4 7 5 A stop watch shows that it takes marisa 10,800 seconds to run a race. How many hours does she take to finish the race? 6 What is the problem asking you to do? What strategy would you use to solve the problem? Decide on a process. Perform the process.

  11. A stop watch shows that it takes marisa 10,800 seconds to run a race. How many hours does she take to finish the race? Convert seconds to minutes, then convert minutes to hours. Strategy: Convert 10,800 seconds to minutes Step 1: Step 2: Convert 180 minutes to hours. Solution: Marisa runs the race in 3 hours.

  12. Converting Units of Temperature Use your formula sheet to convert between Fahrenheit and Celcius. F = 9/5 x C + 32 C = 5/9 x (F - 32)

  13. The temperature in Philadelphia on one day in February is 50 C. What is the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit? Strategy: Use the temperature formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit. Step 1: Write the formula. Step 2: Substitute the Celsius temperature. Step 3: Solve. Solution: The temperature is 41 0F.

  14. PRACTICE!!!! How many seconds are in 2.5 hours? 1 hour = __________ minutes Do you want to multiply or divide? __________ Find the number of minutes in 2.5 hours.__________ Next, convert minutes to seconds.____________ Find the number of seconds.______________ There are _____________ seconds in 2.5 hours.
