  2. The goal of ASB and the Puerto Rico trip is to encourage participants to look critically at the root causes of the different social issues and encourage them to evaluate the role that they can play in the community. • Through daily reflections of the teaching done during each day at La Nueva Escuela, we are trying to form conscientious citizens who are concerned about discovering and finding solutions to the social problems they encounter.

  3. The next step after the week of public service is over is to help participants find avenues for continued community involvement. • Through continued community involvement and education we are helping to create active citizens who will make the community a priority in their values and life choices.

  4. The Puerto Rico trip will focus on teaching kids in the inner-city area of San Juan. • Sponsorship from Teach for America • We will be teaching at La Nueva Escuela Juan Ponce de Leon in Guaynabo, PR • The participants will team up in groups of two (a stronger Spanish speaker will be placed with a weaker one).

  5. Each team will be responsible for coming up with a lesson plan for children between the ages of 5-18. • The purpose of the lesson is to get the students excited about the fields of math, science, and engineering. • There will be a cultural and political focus to our trip. Two days will be spent on the island of Vieques. • We will observe some aspects of the Puerto Rican culture by encountering the political tensions and protests in Vieques.

Number people on trip: 2 coordinators + 6 participants = 8 total Estimated Airfare: $350 * 8 = $2800 Car rental: $30 * 8 days = $240 Housing: $200 * 8 days = $1600 (this is if free housing is not available) Teaching supplies: $100 per teaching pair * 4 pairs = $400 Ferry to Vieqies = $30 * 8 * 2 = $480 TOTAL: $ 5520 Budget
