  1. UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE – CREMATION CASKETS VS. BURIAL CASKETS

  2. Planning a funeral is a difficult time. There are many important decisions to make. You may also hear many new words and terms. This can be confusing. One of these words is “casket.” It is important to know that not all caskets are the same. Let’s gently explain the difference between a cremation casket and a burial casket. Understanding this can make your decisions a little clearer.

  3. WHAT IS A BURIAL CASKET? A burial casket is what most people think of for a traditional funeral. Its main purpose is for burial in the ground. Because of this, it must be very strong and durable. It is built to protect the body from the earth. Burial caskets are often made of strong materials. This can include metals like steel or bronze. It can also be solid hardwoods like oak or cherry. They often have decorative handles and a soft, beautiful interior lining. These caskets are built to last.

  4. WHAT IS A CREMATION CASKET? A cremation casket has a very different job. It is a container that holds the body before and during the cremation process. The most important rule is that it must be made of combustible materials. This means it must be able to burn completely and safely. Cremation caskets are usually made of simple wood, sturdy cardboard, or other natural materials. They do not have decorative metal parts. This is because metal cannot go into the cremation chamber. Their design is simple and dignified for this specific purpose

  5. KEY DIFFERENCE 1: PURPOSE AND MATERIALS The biggest difference is their purpose. A burial casket is made to endure in the earth. A cremation casket is made to be consumed with the body during the cremation. This core difference dictates the materials used and how they are built. One is made to last. The other is made to be part of the final process.

  6. KEY DIFFERENCE 2: COST This difference in purpose also affects the cost. Burial caskets use stronger, more ornate, and more expensive materials. Cremation caskets use simpler, more basic materials. Because of this, cremation caskets are a much more affordable option.

  7. CAN WE STILL HAVE A VIEWING WITH CREMATION? Yes. This is a very common and important question. Many families want a viewing service to say goodbye. This is completely possible if you choose cremation. You have options. You can select a cremation casket made of a solid, presentable wood. You can also choose to use a rental casket. This is a beautiful, traditional casket that has a simple, removable insert. Your loved one rests within the insert for the viewing. Afterward, only the simple insert is used for the cremation process. This allows for a traditional viewing in a dignified and cost- effective way.
