  1. Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Development of a Standard Specification for Horizontal Directional Drilling Student Study State Job Number: 134628 Dr. Alan Atalah Associate Dean of Graduate Affairs Bowling Green State University College of Technology Construction Management Principal Investigator Sandria Brown, M.Ed. Graduate Research Assistant Bowling Green State University College of Technology Construction Management Student

  2. What are Student Studies? Occasionally, ODOT has the need to conduct small research studies that provide quick solutions to immediate problems. The limited scope of these projects does not warrant the time and expense required for typical research projects. Likewise, these studies do not require an extensive team of experts to research the issue. Instead, these projects are adaptable to an academic investigation that can be conducted by a college student under the guidance of a professor in the form of a Student Study. The Student Study program provides students with an opportunity for real-world application of the lessons being taught in the classroom. Completion Date: February 6, 2013

  3. Benefits & Potential Application of Research Results • Fair Specification • Intended User Benefit • Social (Community) Benefits • Quality Installations • Enhance Safety • Reduce Risk & Cost for ALL Project Players

  4. Work Plan & Goals • Goal 1 & 2: Collection of HDD Specifications & Expanded Literature Review • The research team at BGSU collected many of the existing HDD specifications from the various municipalities and agencies of Ohio and other states. • The research team will then compare and identify the major areas of agreement/disagreement among these HDD specifications. • These major areas of agreement/disagreement will be compared against the HDD Good Practices Guidelines manual to narrow down the list of points of disagreement for further research.

  5. Work Plan & Goals • Goal 1 & 2: Collection of HDD Specifications & Expanded Literature Review

  6. Work Plan & Goals • Goals 3 & 4: Surveying the HDD industry and analyzing the survey • HDD industry representatives will participate in narrowing down the issues of disagreement. • The research team will form the Ohio Horizontal Directional Drilling Specification Committee (OHDDSC) that consist of representatives of the following stakeholders: • ODOT and other utility owners, • Contractors, • Engineersand designers, • Suppliers and manufacturers, and • Academia to oversee the overall project.

  7. Work Plan & Goals • Goals 3 & 4: Surveying the HDD industry and analyzing the survey • The PI and the student will develop a questionnaire to solicit the opinions of the stakeholders regarding the weight and value of the disagreed upon issues identified in the previous step. • Prior to the wide scale employment of the survey, the questionnaire will be tested on the members of the OHDDSC to ensure that the questionnaire will fulfill the project objectives. • The research team will collect and evaluate the survey results.

  8. Work Plan & Goals • Goals 5: Drafting the specifications & final report. • Based on the survey findings and the agreed upon issues in the HDD specifications, the BGSU team will write the first draft of the specifications. • The OHDDSC will review the first draft and if there is a disagreement among the members, the interests of the various representatives will be negotiated using the guidance of the Good Practice Guidelines and the survey results. • Throughout the project, the researchers will submit quarterly reports to ODOT. • The BGSU student will present to ODOT the final report of the recommended HDD specification.

  9. Ohio Horizontal Directional Drilling Specification Committee • HDD industry participation is crucial for the HDD industry’s ownership of the specification • Stakeholder Involvement • OHDDSC Recruitment & Time Commitments
