Contrary to popular belief itisnowessentialtocriticallyexamineandensurethatwearerecyclingwitha purposebecausenotallproductsarebeneficialtonaturewhentheyare recycled.Forexample,inthecaseofgreenglasswinebottles,simplycrushing themandusingtheculletformanufacturingmoreglassisanexpensiveaffair andcausesmorepollution.Itwouldbemorebeneficialtonatureandour economytosimplythrowthosebottlesinlandfillsandusesandto manufacturefreshbottles.Reusingthebottleswouldbethebestalternative, buttheyareusuallyjustthrownawaybecausetheycouldeasilybreakandcut someoneandtheyareverydifficulttocleanandsanitize.However,products suchasaluminium,mosttypesofpaper,andcardboardstillhavetonsofvalue intherecyclingworld. True Cost of Landfill and Recycling Landfillingpricesareartificiallymaintainedtopromote waste managementandrecyclingissubsidizedtopromoteenvironmental friendlinessamongthecitizens.Atthesametime,thismakesitdifficult toevaluatethetrueprofitorlossinlandfillingandrecycling.Recycling isheavilysubsidizedandtherearespecialcolor-codedbins,work crews,anduniquetruckstocollectgarbageasifitweregold.Since thegeneralbeliefisthatrecyclingbringsasignificantamountofvalue tothecommunity,desiredexpectationscontinuetobesetathigh governmentallevels.However,sincethereisnosetdefinitionof “desiredexpectations”noonecantrulybeawareofthetruecosts involved. Economics of Recycling Recyclingisjustifiedeconomicallyifitcostslessthanthatoflandfill disposal.Byunder-pricinglandfillspace,wearesimplypersuading peopletodivertwastetorecycling.Thosewhoarguethatunaided marketscanmanagetheproblemarisingfromtheartificialpricingare partlywrongaspriceshavetoberightforthemarketstofunction. Therefore,toarriveatthetruecostofrecycling,wemustfirstanalyzethe pricebeingpaid.Peoplecansellsomerecyclableproductssuchas aluminiumbecauseithasamarketandthereisvalueattachedtoit. Ifrecyclingandlandfillingaretheonlyalternativesforwaste management,thenlandfillingshouldbepricedatthesumofthe opportunitycostofthespaceusedforthelandfillandtheexternalities andcostsofmanagingpollutionresultingfromlandfilldisposal.
