September 20, 2021 Weekly Currency and Commodity Levels CURRENCY OUTLOOK RBI REFERENCE RATE FUNDAMENTALS OF CURRENCY: The dollar index rallied to around 93.2 on Friday, the highest since August 22nd, after the Michigan Consumer Sentiment came below forecasts, raising further uncertainty on when the Federal Reserve will start cutting stimulus. Early in the week, fresh data showed retail sales unexpectedly rose in August and the inflation slowed more than forecasted but remained high. On the week, the dollar gained 0.7%, a second straight week of rises. The British pound changed hands at $1.38 on Friday, its lowest level for over a week, after economic data showed UK retail sales unexpectedly declined for a fourth consecutive month during August. Meanwhile, the country's inflation rate jumped more than expected to a near nine-year high, reigniting concern about a sooner-than-expected policy tightening by the Bank of England. The Japanese yen appreciated slightly to around 109.4 in mid-September, the strongest in a month, amid worries over a slowdown in global growth, uncertainties over Fed's tapering timeline, and strong local data. The Japanese economy grew faster than expected in Q2 and exports grew at the double-digit rate for a sixth consecutive month in August. Meanwhile, BOJ Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said the "Japanese economy will recover as the impact of COVID-19 wanes due to further progress in vaccinations and that consumer inflation will be well below 2% in 2023, at around 1% or slightly more than 1%". September 20, 2021 Weekly Currency and Commodity Levels COMMODITY MARKET OUTLOOK FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMODITY: WTI crude futures fell to below $72 a barrel on Thursday, having hit a 6-week high of $73.14 in the previous session, as tropical storm Nicholas didn't hurt Texas refineries allowing energy companies to swiftly fix pipeline services and electricity as they recover from Hurricane Ida. The oil market has been recently supported by a drop in US crude inventories, supply disruptions and prospects of higher demand. EIA data showed crude stocks in the US fell by 6.42 million in the latest week, almost the double of market forecasts and inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma also fell. Gold was around $1760 an ounce level on Friday, close to levels not seen since mid- August, and is heading for a more than 1% drop on the week. It is the second weekly loss, amid firmer dollar and as traders awaits the FOMC meeting next week for clues on how soon the central bank will start to reduce stimulus. In recent data, US retail sales unexpectedly grew in August while the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits thousand last week from a pandemic low of 312 thousand. Iron ore with 63.5% iron content for delivery to Tianjin fell further to almost $110 a tonne, less than a half of a record high of $230 hit in May and the lowest level since August 2020 after China, the world’s biggest steelmaker doubled down on production curbs and as a sharp downturn in China’s property sector brought down the demand.
