  1. Unseen effects of tooth loss

  2. The modern dentistry aims to restore normal function, comfort, aesthetics, comfort, speech, and health to individuals who are missing teeth.  • Tooth loss can have several consequences such as the affects of the way you feel, social and psychological effects. Apart from these, tooth loss could affect your facial aesthetics, it’s function and health.

  3. Consequences of tooth loss

  4. The teeth makes contact with other teeth throughout the day and this stimulates the alveolar bone that surrounds and supports the teeth. This stimulation is necessary for the bone in order to re model and rebuild continuously.

  5. The lack of stimulation caused by the tooth loss results in the size reduction i.e the width, height and volume of the alveolar bone.

  6. Consequently the gum tissues also gradually decrease. This results the reduction in chewing ability, and impairment of speaking ability ultimately leading to serious aesthetic and functional problems.

  7. After the alveolar bone is lost, the bone in the jawline known as basal bone starts to melt away. This leads to the reduction in the distance between one’s nose and chin i.e the lower third of the face collapse. This causes visible facial structural changes such as hollow cheeks, a forward and upward chin. • People with extreme loss of bone are more prone to jaw fractures. • Toothless people appear unhappy and ultimately self confidence is also impacted. • This is where the root canal treatment becomes important.
