  1. 1 Information for patients for Fixed orthodontic treatment Now that you have a fixed brace, you may have some questions you would like answered. The aim of this leaflet is to answer these questions. Will be painful? It is likely to be sore for about 3-5 days each time the braces are adjusted. If necessary, painkillers such has the one you would normally take for a headache may help. If the braces rub your lips or cheeks, you will be given some wax to help with this. Can I eat normally? Yeas, you should be able to eat normally. However, for your orthodontic treatment to work well and in the shortest possible time, it is important you take care of your teeth and braces. In order to prevent damage to both, you should: Avoid eating toffees, boiled sweets, chewing gums, chocolate bars, etc. Avoid drinking fizzy drinks (including diet drinks) and excessive amount of fruit juice. Take care eating hard foods that might damage the braces such as crunchy apples, crusted bread, etc. cut them up first. What about tooth brushing? It is important that you brush your teeth well, three times per day and use fluoride toothpaste. A daily fluoride mouthwash should also be used. Brushing may take a little longer when you have a fixed brace so take your time. Pay particular attention to brush where the gums meet the teeth. Inter-dental brushes may help you to clean around the brace and in between the teeth. What often will I need an appointment? You will need regular appointments every one to two months during treatment for the braces to be adjusted. Do I still need to see my regular dentist? Yes, I will be important you still have check-ups with your regular dentist throughout orthodontic treatment so that your teeth can be checked for decay. What do I do if I play contact sports? It is recommended you wear a gum shield. This will also be the case if you enjoy riding a bicycle, roller-skating or skateboarding. You will be advised about this. What if I play a musical instrument? If you play a wind instrument, then a fixed brace may make it more difficult. You will need to discuss this with your music teacher. What do I do if my brace breaks? Repeated breakage delay the progress of your treatment and can prolong the length of time that you will wear the brace. If you do break the brace, please telephone the department and ask for an emergency appointment to get it fixed. Do not leave it until your next appointment.   2. 2 How long will treatment take? Usually 12- 30 months but this will vary according to how severe your tooth problem is. Missed appointments or repeated breakages of the brace will add to your overall treatment time. Will I need to wear anything in addition to the fixed brace? It may be necessary for you to wear elastics and /or headgear at some stage during your treatment. Headgear is usually worn in the evening and at night. Elastics are worn inside the mouth during the day and night, including at mealtimes. Will we need to wear another brace once my treatment has finished? Once the active phase of your treatment has been finished, it will be necessary to wear a retaining brace. This may be removable or it may be fixed behind your front teeth. The length of time this has to be worn can vary. Your orthodontist will advise you. Remember: Brush your teeth 4minutes at least 3times each day. Use an alcohol-free fluoride mouth rinse once every day. Avoid sugary snacks & drinks between meals and at bedtime. Avoid fizzy drinks. Avoid hard, sticky and chewy sweets and foods. Continue to visit your dentist regularly. Treatment will usually take 12 – 30 months. You will need to wear retainers for some time after your treatment finishes.
