  1. Earl Grey – Always A Popular Choice When it comes to tea, and the different varieties and choices, few will disagree that Earl Grey is right up there with the best, and most popular, options. Earl Grey is one of the best-known tea blends available and popular in many countries of the world, notably the UK, for example. Even though many sources claim that the tea may have been named after Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey who was British Prime Minister around the 1830s, there is no conclusive proof. Another source claims that a Chinese mandarin first offered the tea to Lord Grey in 1803 as a gesture to thank him for the heroic deed of one of his men to save the mandarin’s son from a terrible fate as he was drowning. There are more such claims. What is known, however, is that Earl Grey tea is well known and that copious amounts are consumed every day. This black tea is a blend to which oil of bergamot is added, which gives the tea is unique taste. Organic Earl Grey Tea can be enjoyed with or without milk – that is dictated by personal preference. It is also interesting to know that Earl Grey is not a registered trademark; therefore many manufacturers produce their own specific version of the tea, and quite often with their own additives. At first Earl Grey was made from black teas, for example the Chinese keemun, but these days many tea companies use stronger teas such as the Ceylon teas to make Earl Grey. The tea is often infused with oolong and mixes of green tea as well. Therefore Earl Grey is offered in many different varieties all over the world. There is even a version known as Earl Green tea. It has a lot to do with how the different teas are prepared and their leaves treated – to result in the type of tea we buy, also Earl Grey and Earl Green. A process of oxidation is used to make the leaves’ aroma stronger. The process also involves spraying the black tea leaves with bergamot oil, which lends Earl Grey that unique flavour. Different varieties of Earl Grey exist, and a drink known as London Fog, for example, is a beverage made of Earl Grey , vanilla syrup ad hot milk. Of course, people will come up with their own versions and add herbs and spices as they please when they pour their cup. But essentially, they will be drinking Earl Grey. When it comes to the benefits of drinking Earl Grey tea, many examples are mentioned. For instance, some maintain it is good for your teeth because of high levels of catechin in it, the antioxidant that helps fight infections and inflammation in the mouth and gums, for example. Further: it contains fluoride, which helps to fight cavities in teeth. It is also maintained that Earl Grey can help to improve problems with digestion, and conditions such as colic and nausea. Many people report that Earl Grey helps to calm them, which is further good for those with anxiety and nervous conditions, depression and those who experience mood swings.

  2. It may not be as effective as, say, coffee with its high caffeine content, but because black teas contain some caffeine, Earl Grey will certainly help to perk you up when you need a bit of energy. These are some of the benefits, and even though there are claims that it may help prevent cancer or heart disease, such claims have not been conclusively proved. More research is necessary. But for the person looking for a lovely cup of tea, even a few every day, Earl Grey may be the answer, whether you drink your tea with additives – or tea that is organically grown and harvested.
