  3. SOBER LIVING HOUSING – THE FACTS • Have You Depended On Drugs Or Alcohol? • Many people who turn to drugs or alcohol can break the habit easily, but there are still others out there who become very addicted. When you become heavily dependent on something, you suddenly start turning on the world and the help needed. If you're not careful friendships and relationships become tricky, and you start shutting people out as a coping mechanism. If you are a parent, you could potentially begin to have an awful time in your own home, and the only thing that comforts you is the bad habit. The cycle continues until the outside world comes along to help. • Brief Overview Of Sober Living Housing • You may hear the term half-way house and wonder what it means. It's a facility where if you want to change the substance abuse habits, you can go to reform. Many clients who attend need to be proactive about their lifestyle and must follow various rules and agreements before they can be released back into the community. • Is It Too Late To Enter A Sober Living House? • No, it's never too late. Some of the houses may require things like interviews, others may be a simple case of a doctor’s referral, but it's never too late to want to change.

  4. RULES FOR SOBER LIVING HOUSING • What Should I Expect Inside? • If you've already been inside one, you'll have a rough idea but remember each house is different. Some may be a resting place whereas others may offer therapy, counselling and a chance to integrate back into society. Most houses share the same trait - following house standards. Below are some of the most common rules. • Bathroom Time • Due to the volume of patients there usually there would be a schedule or rota in place to indicate who can use things like the bath or shower, and what time slot they have. Obviously, things like using the toilet can't be scheduled so don't be too hard on yourself in that respect. • Cleanliness • To keep minds focused, and standards kept high, you may find you have to engage in keeping the house tidy and clean. Tasks like washing up, hoovering and dusting may be expected of you and the residents. • Limitations • Unfortunately, you may find being in a sober living house can feel like school. The idea is to keep you clean and safe and then to put you back on the correct path for your life. This means putting necessary restrictions in place, via a curfew or lockout. This is where you may be able to wander freely outside of the premises for a while, but you must ensure you're back at a set time. If you stick to this you're proving to the health care professionals you are willing to change for the good, can listen to instructions well and want to be a better person.

  5. SOBER LIVING HOMES • On occasions, clients may have to have a drugs test to ensure they are keeping clean. There may be some clients who put up a defensive barrier and may refuse to participate, but when you're in a sober living home, you won't be allowed to be released until you're on the right path in life. • Inside a sober living home, there are options for therapy. This is where you can talk through your problems and help a healthcare professional understand the situation a bit more. In turn, this then means the expert can help you discover the causes for the substances overuse and help work out a treatment plan. • When the professionals are happy you're on the right path in life, there are options to start looking for work. This can be a few hours a week volunteering somewhere, or just doing part-time hours nearby. The idea behind this is to help you integrate back into the community slowly. It's a bit like a confidence boost, so you feel more needed by everyone. • Another focus in the facility is to help build connections and work on healthy friendships. As the old saying goes "a problem shared is a problem halved" is so crucial in this case. Therapy and group meetings are a perfect way to open your eyes to the bigger picture, of addiction. There are times people do feel isolated when taking excessive amounts of drugs or alcohol, sharing the problems with others does help win the battle.
