FLYING CINEMA ZOOM LENSES ON A DRONE

We at Beverly Hills Aerials are always trying to push our gear to the limit in order to discover new ways of utilizing drones to create unprecedented shots for our clients. Innovation is our passion and the driving force behind our company. One of the ways we’ve been finding new inspiration is by flying cinema zoom lenses that seasoned Directors of Photography are familiar with from companies like Angenieux and Fujinon. These lenses are taking flight with full wireless Focus, Iris, and Zoom control paired with industry-standard cameras like the Alexa Mini and RED series on our heavy lifter drone the Freefly Alta 8 octocopter.

  3. This has allowed us to add a whole new element to the way we approach aerial filmmaking by not only allowing us to reframe, but to actively zoom during the duration of the shot adding new dynamics and feeling to every shot. As filmmakers, cameras and the platform they find themselves on like a gimbal or Steadicam, are just tools to help tell a story and are used selectively to further the narrative of that story. Having the ability to fly a cinema zoom lens like the new Angenieux EZ1 30-90mm T2 (pictured above) gives us that creative freedom to tell that story. Imagine the drama you’d add to a shot by starting very tight in on your subject driving down the road at 90mm and zooming out to a very wide shot revealing

  4. the vast desolation he’s driving through. Check out the video below to see the exact setup pictured above for an epic one-take shot for Travis Pastrana’s jump over the Caesar’s Palace fountains just last month.

  5. Flying these lenses aren’t without their challenges which is why many aerial companies have stayed away from experimenting with them. Having that much weight in front of the camera makes it very difficult to properly balance your camera package on the gimbal which provides a stable shot. In order to balance these lenses, we’ve customized our gimbal of choice, the Freefly Systems Movi Pro, with aftermarket and custom pieces to achieve optimal performance in all conditions. See the video below we shot of us demoing the new Angenieux EZ2:https://vimeo.com/261714804
