INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Training Needs Assessment is to identify how the Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association might best support the training needs of the Port of San Diego’s shipyard workers. The results of this assessment reflect the responses of 30 of the approximately 125 members surveyed (approximately 24% response).

  3. RATING SYSTEM The following scale was used in rating the training needs: 1 = Not Beneficial 2 = Somewhat Beneficial 3 = Beneficial 4 = Very Beneficial

  4. SAFETY TRAINING RESULTS The top 10 safety training needs are listed below by highest average score. (Average score in parentheses.) 1. Understanding Hazardous Communication (3.47) 2. Working in and around Confined Spaces (3.47) 3. Creating a Safety Culture (3.30) 4. Performing a Hazard Assessment (3.28) 5. 10-Hour OSHA (3.23) 6. Protecting yourself from Falls (3.23) 7. Performing a Job Safety Analysis (3.17) 8. Clarifying the Supervisor’s Role in Safety (3.13) 9. Understanding and Performing a Respirator Fit Test (3.13) 10. Locking and Tagging Out Safely (3.13)

  5. PRODUCTION TRAINING RESULTS The top 6 production training needs are listed below by number of write-in responses*. 1. Hazardous Waste/Materials (Including Handling) (8) • Blueprint Reading (5) • NAVSEA Standard Items (5) • Estimating (3) • Painting (3) • Walking Working Surfaces (3) * Five other topics had 2 responses. 35 had 1 response each.

LOGISTICS • Preferred Number of Training Hours Per Day (22 responders) 1-2 hours (14 responses) • Best Day of the Week to Train (56 responses) Wednesday, Monday or Friday (Each had 10-11 responses) Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday (Each had 8 responses) • Preferred Time, Morning or Afternoon (28 responders) Morning (21 responses) Afternoon ( 7 responses) • Cost Willing to Pay for Training (24 responders) $51-$100 (11 responses)
