    3. Transport 21 – How is it being delivered? The most extensive programme of investment ever in Ireland’s transport infrastructure Transport 21 runs for a decade, from 2006 to 2015 €34 billion is being invested over the lifetime of the plan A fundamental part of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2007-2013, which is investing €184 billion

    4. Transport 21 – What is being delivered? More roads, driving regional development and sustaining growth New, improved and reopened rail lines More trains and better trains, allowing new and improved services More buses and more services, improving commuter travel and linking communities

    5. Transport 21 – What are the key projects? National Roads Major Inter Urban routes (MIUs) linking Dublin to Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Border Atlantic Road Corridor Improved links to Northern Ireland Additional 850 kilometres of national primary and secondary roads Upgrade of the M50

    6. Transport 21 – What are the key projects? Public Transport - Rail Extension of Luas network Construction of new Metro North and West Construction of DART interconnector New Intercity railcars, enhancing quality and service nationwide Commuter rail in Cork, Kildare, Navan Re-opening of Western Rail Corridor

    7. Transport 21- What are the key projects? Public Transport – Bus 60% increase in capacity on Dublin buses Additional provincial buses Enhanced existing services, new services and improved accessibility features Regional Airports Safety and security grants

Transport 21- Progress to date - National First MIU opened (M1 Dublin – Border) 86% of MIUs open or under construction Remainder through statutory approvals process 67 new rail carriages on Dublin-Cork line, hourly services on route Over 100 of 183 railcars for other Intercity routes delivered, in service on Dublin-Sligo, Dublin-Westport and Dublin-Limerick lines Dublin Docklands Station opened Portlaoise Traincare depot opened Additional buses for Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann

Transport 21- Progress to date - National Construction underway on Midleton line and Kildare line Construction well advanced on Luas extensions to Cherrywood and Docklands Railway Order approval for 1st phase of Navan line Planning well advanced for Metro North Planning progressing for Luas Lucan line and Metro West, phase 2 of Navan line and DART interconnector

Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Bus Éireann Under Transport 21, Bus Éireann is introducing 12 new vehicles into the Limerick fleet in 2008 The introduction of 9 new low floor buses means that the Limerick city fleet is now 100% wheelchair accessible A higher frequency of service will be introduced on a number of services, such as the Ballycummin route, where a 30 minute frequency is to be introduced later this summer

Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Bus Éireann (continued) Other routes which will benefit from improved frequencies are: Caherdavin – Limerick Institute of Technology - City Centre University of Limerick - City centre In order to derive maximum benefit from the new planned services the introduction of some of the improved city services will coincide with the introduction of the proposed Green routes

    17. Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Bus Éireann (continued) Two new services are also planned, from Annacotty to the City Centre and Thomond Village to the City Centre. These are scheduled for introduction in autumn 2008 It is also planned to extend the Coonagh Service beyond its current terminus to serve the new Shopping Centre at Coonagh Cross

Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Iarnród Éireann Limerick is fastest growing rail route in Ireland 835,000 passenger journeys made on Limerick line in 2007 - Increase of 14.5% on 2006 First new Intercity railcars introduced in January – roll out of new stock continues throughout 2008 This will underpin continued growth in passenger numbers

Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Iarnród Éireann (continued) Benefits of new railcars to customers will include: Significantly higher frequency and capacity on all Intercity routes Modern on-board comfort standards The replacement of outdated fleet across the network Improved accessibility for mobility-impaired customers Better reliability and performance, with integral engines in each carriage

Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Iarnród Éireann (continued) Expansion of Limerick area commuter rail service from 1st September 2008 Nenagh-Limerick services will be expanded to include commuting options. New 07.55hrs service will operate from Nenagh to Limerick (serving Birdhill and Castleconnell), with evening returns at 16.45hrs and 17.47hrs

Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Iarnród Éireann (continued) Western Rail Corridor development underway Direct rail services between Limerick and Galway will begin running in 2009 upon completion of the €106.5 million redevelopment of the Ennis-Athenry line Renewal of 36 miles of track Serve Limerick, Ennis, Athenry and Galway New stations at Sixmilebridge, Gort, Ardrahan, Craughwell, Oranmore, Ennis and Athenry

Transport 21- Key projects...for the Mid West Iarnród Éireann (continued) Provide, with connections, a range of inter-regional services currently not available, through linking with Limerick-Dublin and Galway-Dublin services Promote balanced regional development, in line with National Spatial Strategy objectives, by linking two Gateways – Limerick and Galway – and serving the hub of Ennis
