The Optical Brightening Agents Industry

Bleaching is a popular method to decontaminate a colorized fabric. Although it is quite effective, the method often leaves a yellowish tinge, rather than pristine white. To achieve complete whitening of fabric, other methods must be used. One such method is using Optical Brightening Agents.

  1. The Optical Brightening Agents Industry: Uses and Global Scenario Created By : Meghmani

  2. What are Optical Brightening Agents? Bleaching is a popular method to decontaminate a colorized fabric. Although it is quite effective, the method often leaves a yellowish tinge, rather than pristine white. To achieve complete whitening of fabric, other methods must be used. One such method is using Optical Brightening Agents.

  3. Also known as fluorescent brighteners, these chemical compounds when exposed to invisible ultraviolet rays, emit visible light of lower energy leading to a brighter and whiter fabric. • It is important to note that improper application or inappropriate quantities can lead to unexpected results and even yellowing. • The unique property has made Optical Brightening Agents a much sought-after in a variety of industries like Textiles, Plastics, Paper, and Cosmetics.

  4. Where are Optical Brightening Agents Used?

  5. 1. Detergent Industry:According to reports, the detergent industry is the largest user of the fluorescent brighteners. Over a course of time, clothes lose their whiteness naturally. Optical Brightening Agents are widely used in detergents not just protect the whiteness, but enhance the overall brightness of fabric by converting low-density colors to ones with high density. 2. Textile Industry: Any cloth, before being processed has to undergo bleaching because the raw material is infused with impurities that come from pesticides, dust stuck to the fabric while transportation. In case the fabrics are sourced from animals, there is a different kind of impurities like animal fats, secretions, etc.

  6. 3. Paper Industry: Just like the textile industry, the paper industry also requires a lot of bleaching, during which they use Optical Brightening Agents, to achieve completely white papers because raw material contains impurities like snippets of bamboo sticks and wood. Further, recycling of paper also ensures that this industry contributes a lot to the growth of optical brightening agents manufacturers in Gujarat and all of India. 4. Other Industries: Apart from these major consumers of Optical Brightening Agents, there are several industries that make use of this chemical compound. The difference with these industries is that they use the brightening property of OBAs rather than the whitening property.

  7. Global OBA Industry Owing to the consistent growth of manufacturing activities and demand of industries like textile, plastic, cosmetics across the world, the overall demand for Optical Brightening Agents are also rising.
