How do you Test Your Watch for Water Resistance? Most watches today are water-resistant. However, this does not necessarily mean they are waterproof. All these terms can seem confusing, we get it. You don't care about all the technicalities, but you want to know if your watch can be worn underwater. We want you to clarify the difference... in this blog! Water-resistant watches Water-resistant watches may be exposed to water up to a certain degree. If your watch is marked with a water resistance rating on its back, this does not mean that it can be used to dive at 30 meters depths. Manufacturers give water resistance ratings based on 3 factors: the crown and back of the watch, and the gaskets. However, everyday activities (like changing the battery) and the aging gaskets can decrease the watch's resistance against water. To ensure that water does not get into your watch's case, we recommend you test it. There are three ways to describe waterproofness in waterproof watches: ATM, BAR, and meter. What do these terms mean? •3 ATM/bar/30m: This watch resists rain and splashes.
•5 ATM/bar/50m: The watch is waterproof and can be worn while swimming, but not when you jump from a diving board. They cannot dive or snorkel. •10 ATM/bar/100m Waterproof: This watch can be used for swimming, sailing and snorkeling in shallow waters. This watch is not recommended for diving or jumping off cliffs. •20 ATM/bar/200m: This watch can be used for diving and watersports. •It is also important to note that watches without any symbols or text regarding waterproofness are not guaranteed against water splashes and transpiration. What about the moisture in the glass? However, this does not necessarily mean that your watch is leaking. If a watch cools suddenly, moisture can form. The watch's liquid will turn to a thin fog. This moisture will eventually disappear. If you notice drops that are larger than normal, your watch may not be waterproof and should be repaired. To avoid further damage, you should immediately repair the watch if this is the case.
How often do your watches need to be waterproofed? Straight out: Every year. Make it a habit. If you need to repair or replace the batteries, make sure you keep your watch's case open.
