  1. Most Common Potty Training Problems and the Best Ways to Overcome Them • Replacing diapers with proper potty training can be a tad difficult to handle. Expecting it to be easy and smooth is taking it way too lightly. But then parents have been handling this problem for ages so what is necessary is patience and a plan of action. Some unwanted problems may also crop up during this time. Read on for some of the easier methods practised to get children into the habit of answering nature’s call more conveniently: • During this phase, the child does not realise the need for urination. The body, too cannot understand how to control the bladder and releases the urine once it is full. Children need months of practice to understand the right time to head for the washroom. Sometimes even if they do understand they are incapable of expressing it clearly to their mothers or caretakers. But the problem eventually clears up with a bit of patience and hard work. Scolding or ridiculing the child in any way is a strict no-no because it may hurt the child’s self-esteem and make the learning process difficult.

  2. Playing with the faeces is a common trend with most toddlers, and they do this out of curiosity. You have to control this habit of the child by handling it tactfully instead of making them scared. Instead of scolding the child try to make them understand that it is unhygienic. • Also Read:Making innovative Meals For your Preschooler • It has been observed that many little boys like to urinate while sitting down. You have to correct his posture for urination. The habit will get rectified automatically as the child observes other male members of the family or friends in school. • Initially, the child may not always want to go to potty whenever instructed. The habit has to be introduced gradually instead of forced. Make the child sit for some time and keep him engaged with a toy. The child will gradually get used to the idea after the first few times. • In case the child is unable to control the urge to urinate, or potty doesn't be rude with the children and make him nervous. Resolve the situation with patience.

  3. Sometimes your child may get frightened while flushing out his/her body wastes. Your child may think the faeces are a part of his/her body and be curious about the way it is being eliminated. You should make the child understand that this is a body waste and should be removed from the body. This will make your child get habituated with the practice. • Sometimes children urinate while sleeping at night. This usually occurs in the early stages of the training. To avoid this problem teach your child to urinate just before going to sleep as well as right after waking up in the morning. • Many children sometimes urinate or have a bowel movement within a few minutes after coming out of the toilet instead of inside it. Lesser controlling power over the bladder muscles is mainly responsible for this scenario. The controlling power increases simultaneously with the development of the child. For this reason, there’s no need to worry about this problem. This will surely get resolved with the progression of the training period.

  4. Your child may like to go to potty with a specific person. This is not a bad habit which needs to be rectified. You should not judge it as a serious problem. If you are that person, then don’t make them disappointed by not going with them every time. You should accompany the child and wait outside because the child feels more secure with you. This may occur for the first few days of the training, but eventually, the child will become confident enough to go alone. • Some children get frightened by the sucking sound of the flush and feel that it may suck them also while sitting on the toilet. This fear should be controlled by showing the child how it will work and repeatedly reminding that humans cannot be flushed like that. • Sometimes you may see that your child recognises the bowel signal and asks for a diaper instead of going to the potty. This simply indicates that they are not at all ready to take the training properly. Rather than insisting them to go to the potty, you may provide them diaper while performing the bowel movement in the bathroom.
