  1. Andrology Training in India: History, Current Scenario & More… The study of disorders affecting the male reproductive system is called andrology. Previously, the field of andrology was dedicated to treat fertility disorders. But during the past ten years, andrology training in India has advanced quickly to embrace a variety of medical conditions and a wide range of male reproductive system illnesses. Studies have now demonstrated that conditions that were previously believed to be only problems with quality of life are linked to more significant pathology. It is equally evident, nevertheless, that issues with the male

  2. reproductive system have a significant impact on couples' quality of life. Thus, the andrologist is in a unique position to tackle this problem on a global scale considering their level of expertise. A brief understanding of the aspects given below about the andrology certificate course enables to approach Andrology Fellowship in India holistically. •Male infertility and reproductive health Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system. It makes a person unable to have children. It can affect any gender. Male infertility means that a man has a problem with his reproductive system. •Reproductive Endocrinology The hormones released by the endocrine system control many important functions in the body, including growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction. It is well established that reproduction system and endocrinology are inter-linked. • Surgical Andrology This deals with the structural challenges presented by the male while managing Infertility treatments, and the various surgical interventions for corrective measures to achieve targeted successful outcomes. Diagnosis of Male fertility: Fertility specialist or Andrologist will review health history and perform a physical exam. Male fertility is caused majorly by sperm disorders and structural problems amongst other factors.

  3. The following tests are the generally recommended to assess male infertility: Sperm count (semen analysis). At least 2 semen samples are taken on separate days, semen and sperm checked for quantity, uniformity and acidic nature. Further sperm count, motility and morphology are evaluated. Blood tests. Blood tests are done to check hormone levels and rule out other problems. Other tests. Certain tests may be done to determine the cause of sperm defects or health problems of the male reproductive system. Imaging services like an ultrasound may be used to look at testicles, blood vessels, and structures inside the scrotum. Testicular biopsy. If semen analysis shows only few sperms or no sperm, a small piece of tissue (biopsy) from each testicle is taken and the sample checked under a microscope. How is male infertility treated? Treatment depends on what is causing your infertility. This may be through: Artificial insemination: In this method healthy sperms are put at the entrance of the cervix or right into the partner's uterus. The sperm can then make their way to the fallopian tubes. IVF, GIFT, and other techniques. In vitro fertilization (IVF) and gamete intra- fallopian transfer (GIFT) work like artificial insemination. The eggs are mixed with a lot of high-quality sperm, either in the lab (in-vitro) or in the fallopian tube (in-vivo).

  4. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). A single sperm is injected into an egg. Fertilization then takes place under a microscope, then the fertilized egg/s (embryos) are placed in the uterus. Medicine: Hormone treatment may help if hormone disorder is causing infertility. Hormone imbalances can affect how sperm develop. They may be caused by a problem in how the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and testes interact. Treatment may include gonadotropin therapy or antibiotics. Surgery: Surgery is performed to fix problems that keep sperm from being made, matured, or ejaculated. Surgery to remove twisted, swollen veins in the scrotum (varicocele) can sometimes improve the quality of sperm. A Doctor with the following qualifications can be considered as an andrologist at a Registered ART Level 2 Clinic/centre MCh/DNB in urology  MS general surgery  MCh/FNB/DM in reproductive medicine  With minimum 2 years of experience + hands-on experience of a minimum of 15 surgical sperm retrieval (PESA/TESA/TESE/MESA/MICROTESE procedures) In summary though the scope for Andrology services is high compared to the dearth of the availability of qualified Drs or technicians, courses offering basic andrology training could be possible alternative to meet the demand, at least at the IUI level 1 clinics.
