BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) An Algorithm to Save Lives During Cardiac & Respiratory Emergencies
Basic Life Support (BLS) refers to the level of medical care which is used for victims of life-threatening illness or injuries until the arrival of healthcare professionals. The basic life support treatment or care is given to patients who experience respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, or airway obstruction.
Basic life support includes psychomotor skills for performing high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED) and relieving an obstructed airway for patients regardless of their age. The basic life support care can be provided by trained medical personnel that includes emergency medical technicians, and by qualified healthcare practitioners.
Ensure safety It involves the safety of self and patient. Move the grieving patient only if necessary. In cases of an unstable cervical spine, injured spinal cord, and excessive bleeding it is advisable to handle the patient with utmost care. Assess response Talk to the patient for a response. Call for help and return quickly. Reassess the condition of the patient. Active emergency medical service - Call for a professional medical help urgently if required.
Chest compressions Perform rhythmic applications of pressure over the lower half of the sternum. It helps to increase intrathoracic pressure and directly compresses the heart. Check airway and ventilate Check the breathing rate of the patient. If it is too low then perform methods of rescue breath like ventilation with bag and mask, ventilation with advanced airway, mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing, or mouth-to-barrier device breathing. Early defibrillation It is performed by a battery-operated device known as an automated external defibrillator (AED). Applying it to the victim it detects and assesses the cardiac rhythm and prompts the user for further action.
The basic life support course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high- quality chest compressions, appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of AED. deliver
Aim: The basic life support course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings. Overview: This course educates the participants to perform- High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants The Chain of Survival, specifically the components of basic life support Important early use of an AED Effective ventilations using a barrier device Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants
Duration: The course is between 3 - 5 hours long. Certification: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be issued with an Irish Heart Foundation / American Heart Association credit card sized certificate. This certificate will be valid for 2 years. It should also be noted that as this course is certified by both the Irish Heart Foundation & American Heart Association it is recognized internationally.
Maintains sufficient blood circulation Ensures breathing through a clear airway For patients with cardiac arrest, early and appropriate resuscitation involving early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and early defibrillation leads to improved survival and neurological outcomes
