  3. Introduction • Central nervous system (CNS) infections and their sequelae still constitute a major source of morbidity. In the recent past, the introduction of newer broad spectrum antibiotics, improved imaging technology, and intensive care facilities have significantly altered the natural history of CNS infections. Brain abscess (BA) is a universal health problem with a high morbidity and mortality rate; thus, the disease today presents a leading public health problem and a major burden on health care facilities all around the world.BA is a dynamic focal form of intracranial suppuration and a serious life-threatening emergency. They begin as a localized area of cerebritis and develop into an encapsulated collection of pustular materials presenting as a mass-like lesion, similar to the abscess in other sites.

  4. Causes There are several types of causes of brain infections, and each one has its own transmission route. Viruses may be spread through close contact or respiratory secretions, such as sharing drinking glasses or kissing. Bacterial infections can also be spread through close contact or contaminated food preparation.

  5. Symptoms The symptoms of a brain infection will depend on the area of the brain that has been infected, as well as the severity of the infection. The symptoms for each type of brain infection is as follows: Meningitis: Sudden fever, severe headache, stiff neck, photophobia, and nausea and vomiting Encephalitis: Headache, behavioral changes, hallucinations, altered level of consciousness Myelitis: Weakness of the arms and legs, shooting pain, numbness and tingling, bowel and bladder dysfunction Abscess: High fever, severe headache, behavior changes, and nausea and vomiting

  6. Treatment When pus gets confined inside a healthy person’s brain due to bacteria, brain infection is said to occur. The pus collected and dead cells due to bacteria will cause the brain to swell. These infections occur when bacteria find its way to reach your brain through any wound or an infection in any part of the body. Heart and lung infections seem to be major reasons behind brain infection. An ear infection, sinus or teeth infection can also provoke brain infection. Generally, CT and MRI scans are used to diagnose brain infections. A spinal tap or lumbar puncture is often performed to detect problems apart from brain infections.
