You invest plenty of time and resources in keeping your plants safe and healthy. This is why it is understandable to also invest in having them moved safely to your new home. Even if house plants are usually not bulky, relocating them is a complex process since they are more sensitive compared to other items. Too much pressure or stress may damage (or kill) house plants, they must be packed and handled with utmost care. The following tips will guide you to pack your plants and keep them safe, especially whilst in transit to the new location.

You will need: Shatter-proofplasticpots Sharpscissorsorgardeningshears Insecticides/pesticides

  3. Repot Plants Ifyouaretakingyourpottedplants,it'sbesttorepottheminto shatter-proofplasticpotsatleast2weeksbeforethemove. Ceramicorclaypotsaremoresusceptibletodamageandare heavierthanplasticones.Hence,repottingcanhelpreduce theriskofdamageandcleanupafterbrokenpotsand scatteredsoil.Thelighterpotsalsomaketheplantseasierto carry.

  4. Check the plants for insects or parasites Twoweekspriortoyourscheduledmovingdayorbefore packingyourplants,checkyourplantsforinsectsand parasites.Thisway,youcanavoidbringingthemtoyournew homeandinfectingyournewgardenorplants.Ifyourplants areinfected,treatthemwithpesticidesorinsecticides immediately. Please note that if you are moving with Whybirds, you will not be allowed to bring the pesticides during the move. You will have to find a way to dispose of the leftovers.

  5. Prune taller plants Ifyou'rebringingtallerplants,it'sidealtopruneexcessfoliage toavoiddamagingtheplantswhentheyarepackedforthe move.Youmayalsobindortiebranchesthatoverhangthe baseoftheplantssotheywon'tsnaporbreakwhilstyour belongingsarebeingtransported.

Water the plants Afewdaysbeforethemove,watertheplantsasyounormally would.Whilstitisimportanttokeepyourhouseplants hydrated,makesurethatyoudonotgivethemtoomuch water,especiallyasthedayofthemoveapproaches.Too muchmoisturemightcausefungustogrowwhenyou're movingduringsummerorwarmweather,orcausetheplants tofreezewhenmovingduringwinterorcoldweather.

  7. Pack the plants Usemovingboxesthataresturdyenoughtosupportthe weightoftheplantsyouarepacking.Largerplantsmayneed additionalsupportandprotectiontopreventtheirbranches andlimbsfrombreakingduringthemove.Youusewiresor DIYbracestosupporttheweightoftheplant,evenifthe movingvehicleisputunderpressurewhilsttakingtight corners.

  8. Secure the plants Keepyourplantsfrommovingtoomuchwhileintransitby addingpackingpapersorblanketstofillthegaps,especially aroundthebaseofthepots.Thiswillholdtheplantsinplace, makingtheplantslesssusceptibletodamage.

  9. Seal and label the boxes Onceyouhavepackedandsecuredtheplants,sealtheboxes usinghighqualitypackingtapetomakesurethattheboxes willnotcomeapartwhenthevehicleisputunderpressure. Usingacutter,apairofscissors,oranysharpobject,create tinyholesaroundtheboxessotheplantscanbreatheeven aftertheboxhasbeensealed.
