The Dual Marker Test – Understanding its Uses, Benefits & Procedure

The dual marker test is a crucial test to check for the presence of any type of chromosome abnormality during pregnancy. The test helps medical practitioners detect chromosomal anomalies in the developing foetus. These abnormalities can result from structural issues in the chromosomes, a wrong quantity of genetic material in a specific chromosome, or a difference in the number of chromosomes. 1. THE DUAL MARKER TEST – UNDERSTANDING ITS USES, BENEFITS & PROCEDURE

  3. Uses The dual market test is recommended for women during their first trimester of pregnancy. The test helps determine whether the foetus is at risk of developing any neurological disorder. It also helps in the detection of Trisomy 21.T, which can lead to heart issues, mental disorders, and other problems affecting different organs in the body.

  4. Benefits Some of the key benefits of this test are: Determine the requirement for further tests. Assess the risk of chromosomal irregularities in early pregnancy. Provides parents ample time to decide whether to carry the pregnancy.

  5. Test Procedure The dual market test is a simple blood test that usually takes around 10 minutes. This test is conducted with an ultrasound or NT (nuchal translucency) scan of the foetus. This test checks for two markers, namely, Beta HCG in the blood test sample and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A). The test report is generated within 2-days of sample collection.

  6. Conclusion Besides a dual market test, pregnant women are recommended additional screenings. This may include tests Quantiferon TB Gold, vitamin B12, CBC, TSH, and more. Taking this into account, pregnant women should ensure that the screenings are done at an accredited pathology lab. This will ensure that the test results are genuine, accurate, and delivered on time.
