  1. About Dog Ear Cropping Dog owners that love their animals often go beyond what could be reasonably expected of them, such as feeding their dog, offering it a safe and comfortable home, playtime, love and the attention they need when they are unwell, by taking them to a good veterinarian in the region, whether they live in Chicago, Illinois, Los Angeles, CA or in, say, Kersey, CO. Dogs are also kept for different reasons: some are working dogs that accompany owners during wing-shooting exercise, or they serve in the military, or they are merely little lapdogs and companions to their owners. Breeds differ too, and the owner that understands this will also know how to treat their animal as the working dog has a different nature and temperament to the little yorkie that is washed often and adorned in pretty ribbons. This is also why some dog owners are keen to have their dogs’ ears cropped. It is not a procedure meant for all breeds, but for many it is exactly what owners prefer to do. Ear cropping refers to an act whereby part, and sometimes all, of a dog’s ear is removed so that the ear remains upright afterward. It should only be done by an experienced veterinary service that has knowledge and the experience needed to ensure a proper job is undertaken and that the animal suffers no undue pain and discomfort, and that the animal will, therefore, appear to be alert and not submissive to other animals. One finds that certain breeds – mainly working dogs and those that are used to protect their masters and property – undergo this procedure with great success, leaving the animal with no trauma or disfiguration, but only a dog that looks ready to protect and to serve, which is in the nature of several breeds such as Dobermans, Mastiffs, American Bulldogs, Boxers and Boston Terriers, for example. It is important, though, to make sure you can trust your veterinarian to offer an ear cropping service that will not damage the animal, or allow them to walk around with infected wounds because of an inferior procedure. If you consider ear cropping for your dog as a possibility, make sure you know the vet, or that an expert is recommended for you to contact. That way the desired result should be guaranteed and no negative experiences reported. The vet that understands what needs to be done, he/she will always involve owners as much as is necessary by explaining the procedure before the time, informing them what aftercare is required and what follow-up meetings should be scheduled, and also what they can expect in terms of the dog’s appearance after the procedure. The procedure should only be done under general anesthetic to cut the ear in the desired shape so it loses its floppy appearance and leaves the dog’s ears standing up. The procedure is best done when puppies are young – at six weeks old, and not older than twelve weeks. The healing process can take between four and eight weeks to complete, and owners should take the pup to the vet as per prior arrangement to have the bandages changed regularly and for the vet to make sure there is no infection which may need attention. It was mentioned above that cropping is often done on working dogs, to make them look alert and not easily intimidated. In addition to these reasons it is mentioned that ear cropping is done to maintain traditional standards among certain breeds, such as those mentioned. Ear cropping is an old tradition, still followed in many countries among certain breeds and to help dogs stand out from others and to be recognized for certain features – such as being working animals, or as dogs easily recognizable as belonging to a certain breed.
