VERDE SUR ESC ALCALA LA REAL
CONTEXT How I ended up on ESC project After finishing my bachelor’s at the Academy of Music, I didn’t want to start a master’s program—I wasn’t sure what to study next. I’d dreamed of volunteering abroad since I was 16 because it’s my favorite way to travel: you connect with local communities instead of just observing as a tourist. I had my heart set on a project in Portugal, but when I wasn’t accepted, I felt lost. Then I saw an opportunity in Spain and thought, “Why not?” I applied, got accepted, and decided to go blindly.
ALCALA LA REAL Little town near Grenada During my ESC project both my location and workplace where located in Alcala la Real a small city in the mountains 40 minutes with bus from Granada.I lived in a large three-story house with a balcony and a concrete yard, together with other volunteers. At times, when a large number of short-term volunteers arrived, the number of people living in the house could reach up to 25. It could be overwhelming, but at least we had a lot of fun. The house was located about 15 minutes from the city center, so it took us roughly 15 minutes to get to work. It was also very close to shops and other places — everything was within easy reach
ASOCIACION SOCIO – CULTURAL VERDE SUR was founded by a group of people who wanted to create social change in Alcalá la Real, focusing on youth and their involvement in mobility and local activities. Over time, it grew to offer capacity- building trainings for teachers, adult educators, and local adults. The association is supported by the local municipality and is based in the youth center of the town. It's a culturally rich and diverse space, perfect for events and social projects. The core values of the organization are commitment, interculturality, equality, and social transformation.
WORKSHOPS The opportunity to give Once a week, we had the opportunity to organize workshops based on our own interests for children and teenagers from the town. We created artistic, sports, and English language learning workshops.
CAFÉ DE IDIOMAS A crossroad of cultures. Once a week, a “Café de Idiomas” (Language Café) was organized for the local youth of Alcalá la Real. During these meetings, we connected with local teenagers, played games, and learned each other’s languages in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
RED CROSS Daily basis Red Cross- On a daily basis, I worked at the Red Cross, where I helped with administrative tasks. Once a week, I also supported children with their homework and organized games through which they could learn English.
