Chapter-2 UAV Classification and Design Principles Prepared by Lijalem G/Hiwet lijalemg@yahoo.com
Classification by Aerial Platform Based on the type of aerial platform used, UAVs are classified into one of the following four categories. Fixed Wing UAVs Single Rotor UAVs Multi Rotor UAVs Hybrid VTOL lijalemg@yahoo.com
Classification Based on Functions Based on these qualifications, we have the following UAVs: Target and decoy UAVs – these can be used to provide ground as well as aerial gunnery at a target, and can simulate an enemy missile or aircraft.Reconnaissance UAVs –these are used to provide intelligence on the battlefield.Combat UAVs – these have been used to provide attack capability for some high-risk missions.Research and Development UAVs – these have been used to further develop UAV technologies that can be integrated into UAVs that have been deployed in the field.Civil and Commercial UAVs – these are those that have been designed to be used in civil and commercial applications. lijalemg@yahoo.com
Classification by Size Large Size Drones: These drones are used in the attack, combat and reconnaissance roles. Large size UAVs can fly to a very long distance without recharging or refueling. Medium Size Drones: This range of drones is generally used in reconnaissance or to gather data. Such units are deployed in military, commercial, industrial and agricultural fields lijalemg@yahoo.com Global Hawk MQ 1 predator
Small Size Drones:These drones are the most widely used units. UAVs of this size are used by commercial establishments, government departments, professional photographers and hobbyists. Miniature Drones: These units are used for very specific purpose. Miniature drones have been developed for military usage. The device is small enough to fit in the palm. Military personnel use it for spying during a close combat mission. lijalemg@yahoo.com
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unmanned aircraft system (UAS)means an unmanned aircraft and the equipment to control it remotely. An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) has three components lijalemg@yahoo.com
The Ground Control Station (GCS) The GCS ensures a permanent and interactive remote control of the UAV informing the pilot about the progress of the autonomous flight. lijalemg@yahoo.com
A computer or a tablet able to plan the flight and control its execution usually is the base configuration for a GCS. lijalemg@yahoo.com
UAV Communication System The communication system is the radio connection between the ground and the vehicle. To command and control a UAV, radio communication is mandatory to assure a continuous link for emergency operations. Simple COM lijalemg@yahoo.com
Modern COM for better mission lijalemg@yahoo.com
UAV (Aircraft) Design Process The design process for an aircraft can be seen as very similar to other engineering products. However, the complexity of an aircraft and the tight safety regulations required make it very expensive and long process. lijalemg@yahoo.com
STEP 1: Problem Definition At this initial stage, a new market demand has been identified. it is crucial to first identify the key requirements of the new product. STEP 2: Conceptual Design This stage includes back of the envelope calculation, where all the ideas are brainstorm. As the design continues to be revised it will undergo many transformations to conform with end product. lijalemg@yahoo.com
STEP 3: Preliminary Design The preliminary design phase is where engineers go a step further into the design process to create a basic proof of concept. STEP 4: Detail Design At the detail design stage, every single component will be designed from and tested. This is a highly complex and critical stage of the process. lijalemg@yahoo.com
STEP 5: Manufacturing and Assembly At this stage, the aircraft hardware is built and different components of the aircraft are assembled. STEP 6: Flight Testing During this stage, the prototype will undergo rigorous flight tests. STEP 7: Critical Design Review Here the design is reviewed and final small changes are made to adjust for different needs identified in flight testing. STEP 8: Certification Once the aircraft is certified, it can now be allowed into commercial airspace and move into full use and production lijalemg@yahoo.com
