What conditions cause Down syndrome?
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects about one in every 700 births. An extra copy of chromosome 21 causes the condition, which results in developmental delays and physical abnormalities. Here are some of the conditions that can lead to Down syndrome.
21st trisomy The most common cause of Down syndrome is trisomy 21. It happens when every cell in the body has an extra copy of chromosome 21. Developmental delays, intellectual disability, and physical abnormalities are caused by this extra genetic material.
Mosaicism Mosaicism occurs when some cells have an extra copy of chromosome 21, but not all cells. As a result, a milder form of Down syndrome may develop, with fewer developmental delays and physical abnormalities.
Translocation Translocation happens when a piece of chromosome 21 separates and attaches to another chromosome. If the extra genetic material is present in every cell of the body, this can result in Down syndrome.
