  1. Sensory Processing Disorder in Children

  2. Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition in which children are not able to react or respond to the information received from the senses. It is a neurological condition in which the sensory stimuli are not well processed in their heads and they do not react to the feeling like other kids do. Touch, hearing, smell, taste, sight etc are the external senses that allow each individual to react with one or the other feeling, which a child with sensory issues fails to do.

  3. Sensory processing disorder can be treated via various methods and the role of qualified occupational therapists is kind of an important one. They help children learn to do activities that they normally avoid due to sensory issues. One can visibly notice the symptoms of SPD in children, but it depends on the way each child processes the sensations. Children who are easily stipulated will be hypersensitive and the others will experience only less sensations and are hyposensitive. These children with hypersensitivity, react weirdly as if everything is over loud and the rooms are always too bright. They usually avoid being in noisy rooms and have aversions to certain smells.

  4. The symptoms in hypersensitive kids include: A low pain threshold Appearing clumsy Fleeing without safety Covering frequently Picky food preferences regard to eyes or ears

  5. The children with hyposensitivity, desires for more interaction with other people and the world around them. They wish to get some sensory stimulation and try to achieve it through more interaction with the surrounding environment. They are often seen as hyperactive, as they are running around craving for making their senses engaged.

  6. The symptoms shown by hyposensitive children include: a high pain threshold bumping into walls touching things putting things into their mouth giving bear hugs crashing into other people or things

  7. Conclusion These sensory issues and their symptoms can be mild in certain kids and pretty serious in others. When parents notice that such behaviours are interfering with the daily life of a child or affecting their fine motor skills or cannot control these reactions, it is time to consult the best occupational therapy institutions in UAE or any place for that matter. Make sure to consult the doctor or therapist at the right moment. Thus, always keep an eye on your child’s behaviours and behavioural changes constantly.
