Bituminous Tack Coat District 8-0 Winter Schools 2012 • Purpose • To ensure a bond between the existing pavement surface and the new asphalt overlay by leaving an asphalt residue of between 0.02 to 0.07 Gal / SY. If a good bond is not formed, a slipping or sliding-type failure can easily occur.

  19. Spray Bar and Nozzles District 8-0 Winter Schools 2012 • Things to check • Spray bar nozzles are “FOG” or 1/16” slot nozzles • This can be checked with a dime and a nickel. A dime will fit in the slot and a nickel will NOT. • Spray bar nozzles are at the proper angle • Nozzle slot should be at 30o angle from the spray bar • Are spray nozzles plugged • Are spray nozzles leaking while tack is heated • Spray bar at the correct height and angle • Spray bar should be 12” from road surface • Spray bar should be at an angle that allows the nozzles to be 100o to 105o from the road surface

Bituminous Tack Coat District 8-0 Winter Schools 2012 • Things to Check • The air temperature is 40°F and rising • The existing surface is dry • The emulsion is brown, will turn black when the water evaporates • All vertical edges should be covered with two applications • Assure the spray pattern is uniform, with no gaps, bare areas, puddles or streaks

Bituminous Tack Coat District 8-0 Winter Schools 2012 • Things to check • Tack material has been allowed to dry or set up before paving, especially on concrete. • Keep trucks from driving on the tack coat as much as possible. • Keep trucks from tracking tack into areas not tacked. • The spray pattern should be 6” – 12” wider than the paving pass.

Bituminous Tack Coat District 8-0 Winter Schools 2012 • Asphalt Residue Content • The Asphalt Residue must be between 0.02 and 0.07 Gal / SY • On polished or smooth concrete surfaces, new base or binder courses that may have become dusty, apply on the low side. • On milled surfaces, apply at a higher rate. • Remember, too much tack is as detrimental as too little. Can cause bleeding or act as a lubricant allowing the hot mat to shove in front of the roller.
