Some Info on Las Vegas • Las Vegas, the city of dreams which is located in the southwestern part of the US in the state of Nevada • is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week • has some of the finest restaurants, affordable luxury hotels, indoor and outdoor recreation, casinos, and shows • offers many tours to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and above the Las Vegas strip • take a tour by limosine, helicopter, SUV, jeep, bus and humvee. • Methods of transportation: cars, taxis, buses, limo, and train • Cheapest method of transportation is by train, which can get to almost anywhere in the city for only $3.00 per ride

Las Vegas attracts millions of people • entertainment for the kids such as theme parks, arcades, museums, and shops • It is estimated that 48,000 people move into Las Vegas every year (4,000 per month). They are lured into this city for its abundance of jobs, beauty, affordability, and the absence of state taxes • Highest point is Mt. Charleston (11,918 ft.)

The Grand Canyon • one of the oldest natural wonders on Earth • world’s largest canyon • started eroding 6 million years ago • at one time the canyon floor was a shallow sea • located in northwestern Arizona • 300 miles (483 km) from Las Vegas • 277 miles long and 5000 feet deep • erosion (mainly water but also ice, and wind) • other forces include the course of the Colorado River, volcanic activity, earthquakes, continental drift, and slight variations in the earth’s orbit • on average it receives about 5 million tourists each year • 9 separate rock layers can be seen vertically stacked like pancakes • there are 18 different tours and river expeditions

Hoover Dam • located on the border of Arizona and Nevada • one of the most successful projects the United States has ever made • A principle source for flood control, irrigation and electrical power in the southwest • Hoover Dam lies in Black Canyon and the Colorado River runs through it • started conducting tours in 1937 • before the construction of Hoover Dam the Colorado river stretched over 1450 miles from the Rocky mountains in Colorado all the way to the gulf of California • prior to the construction of the dam, the river flooded almost every spring • provides water for 22 million people in Nevada, Arizona and California • named after the 31st president of the United States of America, Herbert Hoover • irrigates 1,000,000 acres in the United States and 500,000 acres in Mexico

Bellagio • located on 3600 South Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas, Nevada • opened on October 15, 1998 • Cost $1.6 billion dollars to build • is landscaped on a hillside with a 10 acre lake • Bellagio’s fountains are magnificent • furnished with great Italian art masterpieces • 3005 rooms in Bellagio consisting of Suites and Guest rooms • cable TV, mini bar, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, safe, data line, in-room movies, wake up service, and voice mail in every room. • restaurant on site • 24-Hour Room Service • multi-lingual staff • concierge • self parking available • other services include car rental, valet parking, airport transportation, laundry, 24-hour security, parking garage • recreational services: fitness center, business center, spa, sauna, game room arcade, whirlpool, Bar/Lounge, restaurant, pool • every room has a balcony and is fully air-conditioned • special features for some rooms: non-smoking and smoking rooms, lakeview rooms, interior room entrance rooms • prices per room start at $180US/night

Food in Las Vegas • Most famous for the variety of food available around the city • There are different types of restaurants such as Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, French, American, and many others • Most of the casinos in Las Vegas serve American food such as hamburgers, chicken nuggets, chicken wings, French fries, salads, and other delicious foods

Caesar’s Palace • located on 3570 Los Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, Nevada • has a giant 4.5 acre pool complex which includes a fitness room and a spa • Caesar’s palace is both a hotel and a place to watch concerts, comedians and other events such as wrestling • is supposed to resemble ancient Rome • Caesar’s palace has hosted many celebrities including Celine Dion who has her own show there. Jerry Seinfeld and Hulk Hogan have their own show there also • consists of 2399 rooms • plenty of great Italian-style restaurants inside • elegant bathrooms made of marble and brass • 45,000 sq. ft. of Caesar’s palace is the casino • casino games include Blackjack, Caribbean Stud Poker, Craps, Keno, Let it Ride, Pai Gow Poker, Poker, Roulettes, Slots, Baccarat, Wheel of Fortune, Megabucks and Super Megabucks • Price per room starts at $129US/night

  11. High Roller at the Stratosphere • World’s highest rollercoaster • located at 2000 S. Las Vegas Blvd • open Sunday to Thursday 10AM to 1AM. Friday, Saturdays, and holidays 10AM to 2AM • cost is $11 per ride and the all-day ride pass is $24.95 • must be at least 4 feet in height to ride • the rollercoaster whizzes around the outer edge of the tower 909 feet above the ground • makes six revolutions around 865 feet of track • sharp and sudden turns • newly raised seats • even though the rollercoaster is not that quick (30mph), the thrill is from the height of the ride • ride duration: 2 minutes

Siegfried & Roy • full names: Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Uwe Ludwig Horn • the show Master of the Impossible, is a well-known show in which Siegfried and Roy do magic tricks • work with animals such as white tigers, white lions, and other wild cats • the show involves illusions and tricks involving the white tigers, white lions, Siegfried, or Roy • their show has been discontinued because of the tiger attack • the attack occurred on Friday, October 3rd, 2003 when Roy Horn was attacked by a 7-year old white tiger, who lunged at Horn’s neck half-way through the show. Eventually, emergency officials treated Horn for massive blood loss and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery • since the cancellation of the Siegfried & Roy show, the white tiger exhibit has still been open • One of the best shows in Las Vegas

The Mirage Hotel • located on 3400 S Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas, Nevada • home to the Siegfried & Roy’s Royal White Tigers and Lions • it has many luxurious rooms that provide elegant washrooms • French-Mediterranean cuisine restaurant Renoir is a AAA Five Diamond Award-winning restaurant. Authentic Italian and New American foods at Onda. Teppanyaki and Sushi at Japanese restaurant Mikado • the Mirage casino is full of excitement • relaxation: hydrotherapy bath, massages, spas, salons • pool made up of small lagoons and grottos • fitness area & gym • bars & lounges • there are wonderful gift shops, jewelry shops, and souvenir shops • clothing shops for women and children from designers including DKNY and Tommy Bahama • Shows: Danny Gans (singer-comedian impressionist), ISIS, and Siegfried & Roy shows (now discontinued because of the tiger attack) • 40,000 square foot Grand Ballroom • a beautiful display of a volcano • mirage golf course • prices per room start at $150US/night
