Reach out to our QB support team at +1-855-738-2784 for troubleshooting guidance to rectify the issue. Why QuickBooks cannot share/access the data file due to multi-user mode issues? You might have experienced that QuickBooks freezes when switching to multi-user mode or crashes unexpectedly. The possible reasons for this to happen on your QuickBooks Desktop are mentioned below-

  3. 1. The Database Server Manager stops running due to Windows Firewall restrictions or damaged Network Descriptor file. 2. The hosting settings on the server or workstations aren’t appropriate for multi-user network setup. 3. The company file is on an external drive that isn’t connected to your system. Techniques to avoid multi-user mode issues in your QuickBooks You cannot share the data file until you fix the issues and switch the server computer to multi-user mode. Apply the following techniques on your computer if the server cannot switch to multi-user mode- Solution 1- Scan QB folder contents in the DBSM after mending the Network Descriptor file

  4. Database Server Manager in QuickBooks is responsible for the multi-user network setup, and data flow over it. DBSM uses the network descriptor file to locate the data source and trace the path to the workstations. You won’t be able to switch the server computer to multi-user mode if the Network Descriptor file gets damaged, as the DBSM will stop running in the background. A simple way to avoid this issue is to repair the Network Descriptor file and register the QB folder contents on the network again. Refer to these steps- 1. Go to the QB folder located on the C: drive using the file explorer or run a direct search. 2. Right-click the Network Descriptor (.nd) file and single-click the Rename option. 3. Type ‘.old’ as an extension to the file name and launch the Database Server Manager after saving the file. 4. Click the Browse option below the Scan Folders tab and mention the QB folder location.

  5. 5. Tap Start Scan and wait until the process completes. Check out the next solution if the server fails to switch to the multi-user mode. Solution 2- Arrange the QB hosting settings on the workstations & server QuickBooks can only share the data file if it is hosted on the server computer in multi-user mode and other workstations access it in single-user mode. QuickBooks won’t switch to multi-user mode if the workstations use the multi-user mode to run. Use these steps to correct the hosting settings- 1. Go to the workstations individually and access the Utilities option in the File menu. 2. Single-click the Stop hosting multi-user access option. 3. Move to the server computer and tap the File menu. 4. Select Utilities and click the Host multi-user access option.

  6. 5. Reboot the systems and open the data file in multi-user mode on the server computer. Conclusion We have reached the end of this blog sharing the causes of QuickBooks Multi User Mode Not Working on your computer. The actions you need to eliminate this problem are also mentioned in the blog, which you can apply to host your QB company file without problems.
