The modern farm tractors originated from these steam-powered devices. Around the 1890s, Benjamin Hold and Daniel Best each had their own steam-driven machine shop. Both of them were prosperous. Daniel Holt achieved success with his first steam-powered track type tractor in 1904, which he later improved into a gas-powered track type tractor in 1906. In 1925, Caterpillar Tractor Co. was established because of the combined efforts of Daniel Best and Benjamin Holt. The merger was successful, and by 1931, the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Illinois, USA, began supplying diesel-powered tractors.
