  1. Chapter 4 Lesson 3 Recorded Sound Reading Focus- What changes in sound recording have taken place since 1877? Phonograph- Invented by Edison. A devise that can record and reproduce sound. The phonograph was first devise used to record sound, but it had drawbacks. Sound was poor quality; cylinders wore out after being played only a few times; Only one cylinder could be recorded at a time.

  2. Invention of the Record Berliner invented the disc record. Used master copy plate that contained all the patterns of the recording. Singer sings once and makes many records from it. Plastic records improved Berliners shellac resin records. Didn’t break as easily; several songs could be put in each Record. Stereophonic records make more improvements. Sound far better because it comes out of two speakers.

  3. Sound on Tape Audiocassette- small container that holds magnetic tape used for playing or recording sound. People could record sound from home using easy methods. Tapes could be played anywhere: moving cars, walkman; convenient and portable. Compact Disc- small disc on which sounds are digitally recorded and played back by laser. Improvements: Portable like tapes, but can skip to certain songs quickly like records; great sound quality; durable.
