Silent Heart Attack

Silent Heart Attacks are often misdiagnosed because they mimic other conditions. Learn what to look out for so you don't miss them!
Silent Heart Attack
Silent Heart Attacks are also called "myocardial infarctions" (MI) or "silent myocardial infarctions." They occur when blood flow to part of the heart stops temporarily, causing damage to that area of the heart muscle. This type of heart attack is usually caused by a clot in an artery supplying the heart.
What Is a silent heart attack?
A silent heart attack is an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) that does not cause chest pain. It is caused by a blockage in one of the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle. As a result, the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygenated blood. If left untreated, a silent heart attack can lead to death.
What Are The causes of a silent heart attack?
There are several different reasons why people develop silent heart attacks. One reason is atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque inside the arteries. Plaque buildup narrows the artery and reduces the flow of blood through the vessel. Another common cause of silent heart attacks is high cholesterol levels. High cholesterol levels can make the lining of the arteries thick and harden, narrowing the vessels further. Other possible causes include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.
What are the symptoms of a silent heart attack?
A silent heart attack occurs when there is no pain associated with the heart attack. This means that people who suffer from a silent heart attack will not feel any chest pains, shortness of breath, or other symptoms that would normally indicate a heart attack. Read more and find out what are the silent heart attack symptoms.
Chest Pain
If you're having chest pain, call 911 immediately. You should also check with your doctor right away.
Shortness of Breath
Chest pain is one of the most common symptoms of a heart attack. It's usually described as pressure, squeezing, heaviness, tightness, or discomfort in the center of the chest. Other symptoms include sweating, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, arm pain, jaw pain, back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, or arm numbness.
Nausea or Vomiting
If you're having any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. You should also see a doctor right away.
Fatigue
A silent heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart stops temporarily. This happens when there's an obstruction in one of the arteries leading to the heart. It usually results in chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue.
Dizziness
A silent heart attack occurs without any symptoms at all. It's not until later that you'll notice signs and symptoms such as dizziness, fainting spells, chest pains, shortness of breath, and nausea. These symptoms are similar to those experienced with angina pectoris, another condition that affects the heart. However, unlike angina, these symptoms do not go away after resting.
The most common cause of a silent heart attack is plaque buildup inside the arteries. Plaque is a waxy substance that forms inside blood vessels and narrows them. When plaque builds up, it restricts the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle. As a result, the heart has less blood and oxygen than usual. If left untreated, a silent heart attack can lead to death.
Treatment Options
If you suspect that you might be having a silent heart attack, call 911 right away. You should also seek medical attention as soon as possible. The sooner you receive treatment, the better chance you have of surviving.
Silent heart attacks occur when blood flow to the heart stops completely. In most cases, people who suffer from a silent heart attack feel nothing. However, if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, or fainting spells, you should immediately contact your doctor.
