  1. Protect your pet when she is in heat with a dog carrier

  2. If you plan to get a female dog, there is a phenomenon you ought to be aware of, it’s called Heat. No, it does not refer to a heat stroke, it is a female dog’s reproductive cycle, where she becomes receptive towards mating with male dogs. It happens once every 5-8 months and lasts for 18-24 days. During this cycle your little pooch will act strange and get attracted to male dogs. Now you need a way to keep the dogs at bay! But more importantly you need a way to keep her healthy and happy.

  3. Here are a few things you could do to take care of your little friend during this crucial period:

  4. Walk • It’s important to strike the right balance between exercise and rest. Some dogs feel restless but on the opposite end of the spectrum are those who feel exhausted all the time. So pay close attention to your dog’s needs and accordingly plan her exercise routine for those days. • When taking her for a walk, always put her on a leash and don’t send her alone into the yard or let her run loose in the dog park. When females are on heat, dogs can smell it and tend to find their way towards them.

  5. Dog Playpens • When you have to go out and leave her alone at home, make sure you leave her in the dog playpen with her favourite chewy and some toys, so that if she gets restless, she has something to entertain herself with. As soon as you get back, take her for a short walk. • Make sure you use some of her toys on one day, and some on another day and keep rotating, to avoid boredom.

  6. Going out • If you have decided to take her to the park or maybe for a little outing, you need to erase the trail she leaves behind during this period, so that the dogs don’t follow her back home. • A good way to do this is to take her to the park in a dog carrier or take her by car, so that the trail is intercepted. There are also some scented products available in pet stores to help mask the scent so that dogs can’t detect that your pooch is in heat.

  7. Extra Care • The most important bit is to take care of her emotionally. It’s a difficult time and she needs your attention, more than ever. So maybe take a day and sit next to her, play with her and pet her, they love having you around. • Especially when they bleed during this period, it could be a confusing time and you should be around to help her with some doggy diapers or pants.
