In general terms, a connection between electrical equipment and devices with an earth plate or earth electrode through a thick wire/strip/ rod of low resistance material to provide protection is known as ‘earthing’ or grounding. In case of surge voltage (due to lightning strikes, line faults, etc), grounding can be understood as the path for transmitting the sudden discharge of electricity, by means of low resistance electric cables or wires, to the earth.
