  1. What Is Formula One? Formula One motor racing started in the 1920s but standardised rules were introduced in 1946, which is when the sport as we know it today truly began. The first race under these new rules was the Turin Grand Prix in the same year. The Formula One World Championship is one of the most well-known racing competitions in the world. It is held annually and consists of around 20 races in a season. The season usually begins in early spring and lasts until late autumn. Each race in the season is called a Grand Prix. These races are held all over the world and each lasts for around 90 minutes (the maximum time allowed is two hours). Drivers and teams accrue points separately, with the driver and team that achieve the highest totals at the end of the season winning Championship titles.

  2. Where Does Formula One Take Place? Since the first World Championship Grand Prix in 1950, 76 circuits all over the world have hosted one of these famous races. Many of these circuits are purpose-built tracks but some take place around city streets, which are closed for the purpose of the event. The Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo takes place around narrow, twisting city streets, leaving little opportunity for drivers to overtake. The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the most iconic races of the season as it takes place at night, around the city streets of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The final race of the season is usually held in Abu Dhabi at the Yas Marina circuit. The circuit is filled with tight corners and long straights to create an exciting race.

  3. What Is a Formula One Grand Prix Like? Each Grand Prix takes place over three days and begins with practice sessions, followed by qualification races. At the start of qualification, twenty cars begin on the circuit. As the first two rounds of qualification take place, the five slowest drivers at the end of each round are eliminated and allocated their positions on the starting grid, from places 16 to 20 and then 11 to 15.The third and final round sees the remaining drivers race to set the fastest time for a single lap. The driver that achieves this begins the Grand Prix race in pole (first) position on the grid, with the others ranked second to tenth.

  4. The British Grand Prix The first British Grand Prix was held in 1926 at Brooklands: a motor racing circuit in Surrey. Since 1948, when the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) leased a former airfield in Northamptonshire and turned it into a race track, the British Grand Prix has been held annually. This track, named Silverstone, became the primary home of the British Grand Prix (though it’s also been held at Aintree near Liverpool and Brands Hatch in Kent). In 1950, the first-ever World Championship race was held there, making the British Grand Prix the oldest World Championship race in Formula One. Did You Know…? 1950 was also the first year that Scuderia Ferrari entered the World Championship, debuting at the Monaco Grand Prix.

  5. The British Grand Prix A Grand Prix race at Silverstone currently consists of 52 laps, with each lap being 5.891km (3.66mi), making it currently the third longest track of all the World Championship race tracks. It is also one of the fastest circuits in the world, with speeds recorded at over 200mph. Did You Know…? Scuderia Ferrari’s first win in Formula One came at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1951.

  6. The Teams Ten different teams can compete in the World Championship in a Formula One season. In 2022, these teams were: Alfa Romeo Haas AlphaTauri Mercedes Alpine McLaren Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Ferrari Williams

  7. The Teams Each team has two drivers who sign contracts for a fixed term with their team. These drivers can be any nationality. For example, in 2022, Ferrari’s drivers are: • Charles Leclerc from Monaco • Carlos Sainz from Spain Throughout the season, each driver accrues points based on their final position at the end of each Grand Prix. The total number of points at the end of the season determines the winner of the Drivers’ World Championship, for which the driver receives a trophy. The points total accrued by both drivers on each team are ranked and the team with the most points wins the World Constructors’ Championship title, an award for the whole team. Any prize money earned is divided between the team.

  8. The Teams Hundreds or even thousands of people can play a part in a Formula One team, in addition to the drivers: • designers (constantly working on improving car performance) • engineers (using data to inform designers and drivers on next steps) • analysts (reading data from the car and passing it on to engineers) • mechanics (working on the car before, during and after each race) • media team (supporting the whole team with media enquiries) • trainers (preparing drivers for each race) Most teams also have a Team Principal – the head of the team who takes responsibility for all staff and how successful the season has been. Additionally, there could be a huge number of factory staff who support the day-to-day, behind the scenes activity of the team throughout the year.

  9. Team: Scuderia Ferrari …….Scuderia Ferrari (often referred to as ……Ferrari), based in Italy, are the oldest …..currently competing team in Formula ….One, having debuted in the Monaco Grand …Prix in 1950. The team won its first World ..Championship title in 1952. Founded in 1929 by Enzo Ferrari, an Italian racing driver, the Scuderia Ferrari racing team have won more World Championship titles by 2022 than any other. In 2020, Ferrari celebrated the milestone of 1000 Grand Prix race entries.

  10. Charles Leclerc Charles Leclerc, born in Monaco in 1997, began his Formula One career in 2018 after graduating from the Ferrari Driver Academy. Leclerc enjoyed success from a young age as a karting driver, securing championship titles and trophies between 2009 and 2013.In 2019, he was selected to drive Ferrari’s newly constructed SF90 racing car, achieving two Grand Prix victories that season. Did You Know…? Before racing for Ferrari as a Formula One driver, Leclerc became a Formula Two champion (Formula Two is similar to Formula One but the cars are all identical and less powerful than Formula One cars).

  11. Carlos Sainz Carlos Sainz is a Spanish racing driver currently with the Ferrari Formula One racing team. Born in Madrid in 1994, Sainz is the son of a World Rally champion. He first entered the Formula One racing world with the McLaren team, before moving to Ferrari in 2021 to become Charles Leclerc’s teammate. Did You Know…? Carlos Sainz is the third Spanish driver to race for Ferrari. The two other Spaniards to have been on the Ferrari team are Fernando Alonso (2012-2014) and Alfonso de Portago (1956-1957).

  12. Other Famous Formula One Drivers Many other Formula One drivers have enjoyed success on the track for a range of teams, including: Sir Jackie Stewart Sir Stirling Moss Niki Lauda Alberto Ascari Alain Prost Fernando Alonso Kimi Räikkönen Juan Manuel Fangio Ayrton Senna Jim Clark

  13. Top Formula One Stats • As well as Singapore, Bahrain also holds its Grand Prix at night and Abu Dhabi’s Grand Prix is a day-night race. • Different colour flags are used to give messages to racing drivers during a race: yellow, green, red, blue and chequered (black and white). • In 2020, it is estimated that over 400 million people watched Formula One on television. • Pit stops are extremely fast; around 20 people work simultaneously to change wheels and other car parts, make modifications if required and even help the driver by clearing their visor, all in around three seconds!
