  2. Major changes 1. All students will take the same exam paper (Cancel Syl.A and Syl. B); 2. Standards-referencing will be adopted to report the results; 3. Introduction of School-based Assessment; 4. Format of individual exam paper.

  3. Standards-referenced Assessment • 1 - 5 levels, 5* • Descriptors/criteria of different levels of performance (Speaking: Speak English fluently) Grade 5* • Depends on your own performance • Others’ performance won’t affect yours

  6. Paper 1 – Reading and Writing Theme-based (e.g. food) • Reading (Part A) • HK Restaurant Guide • A memory of New Year Dinner • Westernization of Asian Eating Habits • Writing (Part B) • Poster in a restaurant • Eating at home • Working as a waiter/waitress

  7. Paper 1A - Reading (20%, 1 hr) • Formats of questions • M.C. • Matching • T/F/Not Given • Information-filling (Words/No.) • Short questions • Open-ended question • Which restaurant would you choose to go and why? • … Give reasons or your answer. • How similar is the meal in the text to your own experience of New Year Dinner?

  8. Paper 1 B- Writing (20%, 1.5hrs) • Task 1 • 100-150 words • Based on the information provided like situation, purpose, pictures and graphs • Task 2 • 200-250 words • Open-ended: your own ideas • 2 choices: Argumentative writing or Narrative writing

  9. Paper 2 – Listening & Integrated Skills (30%, 2 hours) • Theme-based • Situation given (Organize the School Open Day) • One role (a S6 student, Head Prefect) • Multiple tasks (different purposes and readers) • INPUT • Listen to the tape • Read the Data File • OUTPUT • Multiple writing tasks

Paper 3 - Speaking (15%, 12 mins) • Theme-based • Preparation (5mins) • Read the information and make note • Part 1 – Group Discussion (6mins) • 4 students • Based on given prompts (e.g. instructions, pictures, graphs, tables) • Part 2 – Individual Presentation (1min) • Respond to one question based on the theme in Part1 • Students take turn to present

  12. SBA – School-based Assessment • Weighting: 15% • Duration: 2 years (S4-S5) • What do students need to do? • Log Book • Discussions • Individual presentations • Respond to teacher’s questions (Assessment: oral performance only)

  14. School Support • F.3 summer bridging course; • Split class arrangement (20-21 students per group); • Collaborative work of teachers in designing teaching materials; • etc.

  15. Parents’ Support • Encourage students to read more and read extensively, read and discuss the content with them; • Watch movies / TV programmes with students; • Select books / movies / TV programmes together; • Monitor self-access learning progress.
