  1. Browse the book collection by subject area? The C-N Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize library materials. This system groups or classifies like subjects together in ten broad categories. These ten categories are further broken down into sub-categories which are then further broken down, using decimals. As the number is broken down, it becomes more specific.

  2. How do you get call numbers from the Dewey classification categories? • These numbers become the call number which is assigned to a book and used to locate a book on the shelf in the library collection. • For example: If you were interested in History which is in the 900’s and specifically ancient Greek history, you could look in 900’s detailed breakdown to get the area to browse in the stacks. The number would be the 938 section of the stacks. • Another example:If you were interested in Education which is in the Social Sciences in the 300’s and specifically Elementary Education, you could look in the 300’s detailed breakdown to find the area to browse in the stacks. The number would be the 372 section of the stacks.

How to read a call number: For the book, Greece before Homer, ancient chronology and mythology, the call number is: 938 = the Dewey classification number F771 = the Cutter number that is a combination of letters and numbers for the author’s last name, used to arrange materials in alphabetical order on the library shelves
