Q&A With Coach Shiloh Reed Shiloh Reed is a somatic movement and embodiment practitioner, certified relationship coach, and treasured team member at the Jessica Yaffa Coaching Institute. We are excited to be able to share her insights on somatic flow, how you can incorporate it into your self-care routine, and how we utilize it in our women’s relational wellness retreats and relationship coaching sessions.
Q: What is Somatic Flow? A: Somatic movement is a type of somatic practice that refers to body movements that are guided by an internal focus on physical sensations- this unites the mind body connection. Q: What are the top benefits of somatic flow? A: The top benefits of somatic movement are: Regulates the nervous system Process and identify emotions Releases stuck energy/emotion Unfreeze trauma patterns Unites the mind and body Opens access to bodily wisdom Deepens connection with your inner landscape
Q: How did you find somatic flow and begin teaching? A: I first learned about somatic experiencing in grad school as a therapeutic modality we trained in. More recently I was introduced to Non-Linear Movement Method™ through my own personal therapist as a supplemental processing tool. After trying it out myself and seeing the benefits I wanted to learn more about the work and how to implement it with my own clients. In early 2024 I became certified as a NLMM™ practitioner after studying under Michaela Boehm, founder of Non-Linear Movement Method™. Learning the depth modalities of NLMM™ opened my eyes to hug benefits of somatic movement and it seemed like the perfect tool to add for client work.
Q: How has the practice of somatic flow impacted your life? A: Somatic movement has become a regular hygiene practice. It has taught me how to be more aware of how I am moving through emotions or dysregulation. In addition it has taught me how to meet myself in those emotions to be able to move more flexibly through various stressors of life. As a mom of 4 it has also become a language and practice I use in my parenting. I have seen so much change in my own family by teaching more awareness of self and giving my children tools to become empowered in these spaces so that they are not as overwhelmed.
Q: Do you have any tips on how to prepare for your first somatic flow class? A: Come as you are! It can be scary to try something new or unknown. Somatic movement is doable for everyone regardless of age or any physical limitations. What I love about this practice is that it is incredibly unique to you and your process. Don’t over think it- just come with an open mind and willingness to show up differently for yourself!
Q: How is somatic flow incorporated into women’s relational wellness retreats within the coaching institute? A: Somatic flow is offered as a class during the relational well-being retreats with the coaching institute. I begin my class giving an overview summary of embodiment, nervous system health and the basics of somatic movement so that everyone understands the class focus. This has been a wonderful supplement to help attendees further deepen their connection to self while also adding an additional wellness tool that they can continue even after the retreat ends.
