  2. The Benefits of Working With A Coach With the business of life and relationship stresses, each of us can benefit from working with a relationship coach. Relationships are how we find belonging, support and can have a tremendous impact on our mental health. Healthy relationships are foundational to personal well-being and flourishing. A relationship coach can support you with seemingly minor concerns, as well as help with more challenging relationship dynamics. They help when you are experiencing disconnection, feel at some type of impasse or have experienced significant hurt or betrayal.

  3. Many seek relationship coaching not because there is a significant “problem” to be addressed, but simply to cultivate deeper intimacy. Relationship coaching is for couples and any other relationship where people want to grow closer and address challenges. Those who work with a relationship coach report experiencing greater levels of relational andpersonal satisfaction and happiness.

  4. Coaching vs Therapy For those not familiar, It can be easy to confuse therapy and coaching. One of the major differences is that a licensed therapist has received a Master’s or higher degree in psychology or related discipline. While coaching doesn’t require a license through a regulatory entity, many have obtained certifications. Both coaches and therapists often have histories of working in the field of psychology and participate in continuing education. Therapists and coaches are often committed to their own personal and relational improvement. In relationship coaching, the focus is primarily in the present and things that can be done today to improve your relationship.

  5. Therapy places greater emphasis on your history, including intimate relationships, family of origin and life experiences or traumas. While relationship coaching doesn’t avoid talking about the past, when doing so it is to inform the present. Relationship coaching sessions tend to include specific targeted goals, whereas therapy is more open-ended and unstructured. Therapy sessions will not necessarily have an intended outcome, allowing time for processing led by the client. Coaching sessions can be more interactive and directed by your coach to ensure challenges are addressed and solutions discovered.

  6. Something To Be Mindful Of It’s important to note that not all coaches are the same. Some have studied to become a Professional Coach and have obtained certifications. Others may present themselves as being a coach, without having gone through this process. Relationship coaches have acquired additional training to become experts in the field, such as coaches through Jessica Yaffa Coaching Institute. It’s good to be mindful of this when looking to work with a professional relationship coach.

  7. What Do Relationship Coaches Help With Relationship coaches help you to identify goals in order to improve your relationship. Often these begin as easily attainable goals and become more challenging once progress is made and relationship confidence is cultivated. Coaches can help with breaking unhealthy communication or behavior patterns and support you in cultivating new ways of interacting. They can support you in addressing expectations, unresolved hurts and identifying and establishing boundaries.

  8. Relationship coaches guide you in deepening your capacity for empathy and understanding of the other. They point out how one can tend to blame or judge, and offer skills for self-reflection and personal responsibility. They remind you that it’s possible to work through differences even if you don’t always see eye to eye. Relationship coaches help you to see situations and solutions that perhaps you hadn’t previously identified. Another benefit of working with a relationship coach is that they help to normalize challenges common to nearly every relationship. Each of us experiences relational ups and downs, hurts and have expectations and longings. Relationships aren’t always easy! It can be helpful to have a coach reminding you that you are not alone.

  9. What’s Involved in Relation -ship Coaching Sessions Relationship coaching sessions should be a safe space where you feel free to openly share your feelings and experience. Your coach will be there to help you communicate your feelings, needs and desires clearly and effectively. It is not the role of a relationship coach to tell you what you should do, but rather to guide you to be empowered within yourself. A relationship coach will ask direct questions that help you to determine what’s best for you and your relationship. Sessions are usually 50 minutes to an hour. However, there are also relationship workshops and retreats led by coaches that provide more in depth and intensive opportunities for growth. Sessions will often include goal setting at the beginning and a review of progress at the end.

  10. Limitations of Relationship Coaching If someone is struggling with an unmanaged mental health disorder, the support of a licensed therapist or psychiatrist is needed. Additionally, if someone has an untreated addiction that is interfering with daily life, additional support will be recommended. Often a relationship coach will work in conjunction with a therapist, psychiatrist or addiction specialist. There are times however, when relationship coaching is unproductive until an addiction or mental health challenge is sufficiently stabilized/addressed. Your coach is there to assess and determine the best course of action.
