  1. AN ENGINEER’S JOURNEY TO AUSTRALIA VIA PR VISA Many people are wary about moving to another country and settling there permanently. This is mostly because they are under the false impression that immigration is a long and tedious process or more precisely, a hassle. Even though this world view might actually be a fact in some countries, fortunately for Australia, it can’t be farther from the truth. To help give you more clarity, here’s a personal account of an engineer’s experience of the various stages of the Australian PR process that he had to go through to get the final nod, i.e. the approval of the PR visa, from the government of Australia. 1. CLEARING AN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TES There are many English proficiency tests that can be taken to qualify for the PR visa. Tests like the IELTS and TOEFL are a few examples. These tests basically assess the proficiency of the English language in 4 sections- reading, listening, writing and speaking. For applicants coming from countries where English isn’t the mother tongue, the clearance certificate of one of these tests is necessary. I, a civil engineer, sat for the IELTS. The 4 sections of IELTS are assessed separately and need a minimum score of 6 points to be approved by Engineers Australia. This test is also needed by DIBP (Department of Immigration and Border Protection) and to secure a point from there, I had to score at least 7 in each section. Clearing the exam is no easy task and I underwent proper practice and preparation fora month prior to the exam date and I am happy to say that all that hard work was worth it since my results were more than satisfactory. Reviewing the test papers is something most people do to hone their skills. To review, one can either visit IELTS test centres and pay a certain amount of money for the service or search online and download review papers for free. There are many good online sites available that can help with reviewing without much trouble. For my part, I did both.

  2. 2. CLEARING THE MSA For applicants who want a permanent residency visa allotted based on their proficiency in a highly skilled job like engineering, they need to sit for a points-based eligibility test called the MSA (Migration Skill Assessment). Engineers Australia, the administrative body of engineers in Australia, oversees the proceedings of the MSA. So, engineering applicants like me who want to assess their skills and work experience to secure points for the MSA must start by filling out a Migration Skills Assessment application in the Engineers Australia online portal. A CDR report is required in the MSA for the assessment. A CDR report is a Competency Demonstration Report which throws light on the applicant’s past work experience and educational qualifications which help the examiner to assess whether according to the ANZSCO codes he is capable of fitting in the occupational classification he has opted for himself. The MSA takes an average of 10 weeks to publish the result. However, if an applicant does not want to wait that long he can always opt for Fast-track Migration Skills Assessment by paying an extra amount of AUD 250. This will shorten the waiting period to only 10 working days. Since I was in no hurry to get the visa, I patiently waited for my MSA result which was sent to me within the stipulated 3 months period. In most cases, they do not exceed the 3 months mark. 3. SUBMITTING AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Expression of Interest comes after clearing the MSA. By submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) the applicant shows that he is interested in applying for an Australian visa. Thus following protocol, I too submitted my EOI through the DIBP online portal along with other relevant documents. Also, while submitting the EOI, I remembered to calculate the number of points I had secured based on the earlier skilled migration exam. The higher the points, the faster the applicant can get an invitation by DIBP to apply for the Australian visa. 60 is the minimum point needed to be invited for visa application. Fortunately for me, my score was way above 60 so I didn’t have to wait too long for my invitation. The result of the EOI further adds to the points score secured by the applicant which in turn determines DIBP’s invitation for visa application. So in my opinion, it is important to keep a count of all the points during the process of EOI submission.

  3. 4. APPLYING FOR AUSTRALIAN PR VISA After my EOI got accepted, DIBP sent mean invitation via email to apply for an Australian visa. The first part of the PR visa application constitutes creating an ‘ImmiAccount’ at the DIBP website. There I had to upload all the necessary documents for immigration i.e. birth certificate, passport, educational qualifications, police clearance, IELTS result, EA assessment result, medical examination certificate, etc. The documents had to be in PDF format and scanned in colour. I also had to pay the charges for visa application there. I had to pay via credit card as direct bank transfers aren’t enabled. Paying via debit card is an alternative. Besides all this, I had to answer some questions on that page regarding my personal identity, work experience, family details, etc. After all the verifications were done by the DIBP, I received the visa grant via email. On my initial entry to Australia- within the date provided by the DIBP- I was sure to carry a copy of my visa grant letter, passport and an identification proof according to the mandates of DIBP.
