Network and Focal Point Introduction (cont’d) • BEI – A PSD research institute • Established in October 2000 • Seed money from private sector • Currently, self sustainable • Focus Areas: • CSR, Corporate Governance, Investment Climate Assessment, SME • CSR Centre • Monthly roundtables • Case Studies • Documentaries • ESRB guidelines for the Banking Sector • CSR Code for the RMG Sector

Network and Focal Point Introduction • Global Compact introduced in 2002 • Global Compact, UNDP, BEI, Private Sector and BEF • Not very active • Lack of Resources – Financial and Human • Lack of CSR understanding in general • Dormant at the UNDP • Country Program • Left PSD with the World Bank Group, • particularly IFC, SEDF and • more recently, the establishment of BICF in 2007

  4. Bangladesh Network – since June, 2006 • June 2006 – 8 participants • March 2007 – 25 participants • Who are the participants? • Local Private Sector Leaders • Financial Institutions, including a public bank • Business Schools • SMEs

  5. A Journey from 8 - 25 • Regional Meeting in June 2006 • Opportunity to engage the growing private sector • Existing CSR Champions • Corporate Governance experience • Rigorous promotion and awareness raising

So what is going on? • Monthly roundtables • Communication • Write letters to business leaders • Distribute various GC communications • Develop write ups • Regular meetings and dialogues • Individual companies/organizations • Chambers and Associations • COP • Share some of the relevant COPs • Identify current practices within the organization • Align it with the relevant principles • Outcome – 3 COPs (2 published & 1 WIP)

  7. So what next? • Form a loose Working Group • Recruit more participants • Launch the Global Compact before 5th ALNF • Aim for quality and not quantity • Develop Partnerships • intranetworking • internetworking
