A Focus on Leadership Development for the future success of Africa • Why Leadership? • Without good leadership at the top level, all the other excellent initiatives in Africa will be stifled. • Good leadership in all sectors is critical for Africa’s future success • Investment in good leadership has an enormous return in terms of future social, economic, political, technological and environmental benefits, and poverty alleviation. • Objectives of the African Leadership Institute: • Establish a network of future leaders across Africa committed to the • successful development and transformation of the continent, and a support • structure that will empower these leaders. • Provide the cream of tomorrow’s leaders in Africa with the experiences, • insights, tools and confidence to become drivers of the renaissance of Africa • Seek African solutions to the specific demands on African leaders • Leverage the leadership capabilities of the network of AfLI alumni and • faculty in community development, and in further conveying leadership • development within the broader community

Objectives of the The Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship Programme (ALP) • Provide a select group of high potential young leaders (25- 39 years) from • across Africa - the Archbishop Tutu Fellows - with: • An intensive learning and broadening experience on the principles and • application of Leadership, with particular emphasis on African Leadership • in a Global context • The confidence, experiences, tools and insights that will enable these • future leaders to “play” in both the African and the Global arena • A support network that will enable and facilitate the ongoing initiatives of • the Fellows in acting as leaders of change in Africa • Mentoring, guidance & institutional support • A private electronic network that will enable ongoing communication • on African leadership issues • Establish a strongly bonded network of future leaders of sub-Saharan Africa • Leverage the capabilities of the Fellows and the Institute for the benefit of the • broader community through community based projects

Outcome The primary outcome of the Institute’s activities will be the development of a networked community of future leaders across Africa – members of an exclusive club who have been exposed to a wide variety of leadership learning experiences from both an African and global perspective – who will have at their disposal the facilities, the connectivity, the intellectual foundation and the rich human resources of the Institute and alumni to influence change and successful development of the continent. They will be applying leadership in practical applications that will make a difference to their communities As Fellows of the Institute they will feel the collective expectation to make a difference, and the peer pressure to do it right.

Content of the Formal ModulesOpening Module – 9 DaysIn South Africa • The Main Areas of Focus on this Module are: • Self-Awareness, Self Leadership & Psychology of Leadership (Theoretical & Group Work) • Core Principles of Leadership & Leadership Styles (Different theories by eminent exponents • of leadership, universal/African) & their applicability to Africa • African Leadership – what is different about African Leadership? (Guest speakers, Plenary & Syndicate work, Story telling, Dialogue, Internalising) • Historical, Cultural & Situational Impacts • Diversity • Gender issues • African Values & their challenges for leaders • Other topics to stimulate discussion? • Values, Ethics & Good Governance (Guest Speakers, Tutorials, Dialogue) • Scenarios of the Future of Africa (Group Project) (Workshop/Syndicate structure + expert speakers on issues) • Macro issues facing leaders in Africa (socio/political/economic/cultural/technological) • Uncertainties & Scenario Frameworks • Preparation for Individual Outreach Project (Theory, Guidance, Practicals) • Project Leadership & Management Guest Speakers

European ModuleGlobal Dimensions of LeadershipFocus on Experiential LearningOverall Host : Templeton College, Oxford 4 Days At Oxford 4 Days In London & Elsewhere Wrap-up • Tutorial based Experiential Learning: focused conversations framed by speakers & practical exercises designed to throw new light on challenges of leadership. Sessions will use, for example, ideas from systems theory, Shakespeare, music and the visual arts. Themes that will be addressed: • Complexity, Ambiguity • Values, Ethics & Governance • Communication, connectivity & relationships • Global issues, e.g. China & Africa; the future of Africa • Experiential Learning: high intensity learning experiences involving for example: • Future of technology & relevance to Africa • Sponsor Organisation hosting sessions • Meet global leaders • Another UK University session serving a disadvantaged community • Group Project to explore group behaviour • Internalising the Learning: Group & Individual reflections including: • Peer assessments • Self Awareness • Setting own leadership goals • Individual project feedback & guidance • Group Project • Network communication • Programme Assessment

Fundamentals of the ALPA Prestigious ProgrammeA unique multi-faceted leadership learning experience for the next generation of Africa’s leaders Fellows The cream of Africa’s future leaders – community, business, political, health, environment – all sectors 20 selected high potential leaders from across Africa 25-39 year olds who have leadership potential Selection On merit based on the defined criteria, from across Africa, plus representatives from sponsoring organisations Duration 1 year programme, part-time (Tutu Fellowship Certificate on completion) Follow-on participation as Tutu Fellows of AfLI network, with expectation to apply the leadership learning + Alumni events Structure 9 day Group Learning Modules in each of South Africa & Oxford Group Project between modules Individual Leadership Project to apply & develop leadership in community Ongoing Coaching/Mentoring Networked interaction & debate on global & African issues

The Characteristics we are looking for in the Students selected to attend the Programme People, who, by their actions and achievements, and the values and principles by which they conduct their affairs, have demonstrated their potential to be a leader • We will be seeking candidates in the age range 25-35/40, who demonstrate many of the following characteristics: • Confident, Optimistic, with high Expectations and high Energy • Courage to take Risks – be prepared to fail; challenge the status quo; do things which may be unpopular • Determination and strong professional Will • High Values, Standards and Ethics • Ability to Inspire others to believe in themselves and the cause; to Liberate and Empower others to succeed • Committed to Serving his/her constituency (stakeholders/cause) ahead of self-gratification • Humility – chosen to lead rather than self imposed • Visionary, Strategic and Forward thinking – leading for a better future • Systemic thinker – ability to assimilate, simplify and channel complex inter-connected forces to advantage • Empathy and strong Relationship builder • Candidates (other than Sponsor representatives) must be: • Currently living in Africa, or temporarily placed abroad by their employer or completing further • education abroad • Committed to living in Africa and to actively contributing to its long term success Candidates who would not otherwise have access to high level leadership training are particularly welcome

The ALP is a Learning ProgrammeThe emphasis is on Experiential Learning, not Teaching,offering a variety of formal and informal learningopportunities, focused on enhancing the leadership capabilities of the candidate The ALP is designed around 4 different types of learning in a coordinated and reinforcing programme. Experiential Mentoring, Tutorials & Internalisation Theory, Examples & Case Studies Peer Interaction & Practical Application

The Programme is based upon 5 Platforms • Centralised Group Learning Modules • Group Project – Scenarios of the Future of Africa • Individual Community Project to apply the learning • Networked Interaction & Debate • Mentoring Each Platform will offer different learning experiences in an integrated and coordinated programme

  12. FacultyA group of people have been appointed as Core Faculty, who participate in most of the formal modules, in the design of the programme and in networked activities. Others are invited to contribute to the programme for specific events, activities or topics. What will the Student have achieved by the end of the year long Programme ? • Membership of a elite network of leaders throughout Africa and beyond, committed to leading change and development on the continent. • A self formed view of leadership principles and values that are most appropriate to the future African context and his/her own circumstances, which will be the model he/she will apply to his/her own leadership endeavours • A breadth and depth of understanding of leadership – what has been successful and unsuccessful (and what that means) in different contexts, at different times, and in different cultures – and the complexity of demands on leaders. • A broader understanding of how business, government and civil society function in the global arena • A global perspective on the challenges and application of leadership within an African context, and confidence in the role he/she can play as a leader in the global arena • Practical experience of leading a project through which he will have influenced at least 25 young Africans. • Interaction with African and global leaders • A breadth of understanding of the regional and global forces and issues that will influence the decisions and behaviours of future leaders in Africa. • A broad, systemic, strategic and visionary approach to addressing leadership issues • Practical experience and feedback from working as part of a team of high calibre individuals • A strong working relationship with a mentor who will continue to guide him/her in the coming years on the path to successful leadership. • A certificate of successful completion of the programme and elected membership of the ALI Fellowship, and a Tutu Fellow.. Internally he/she will be a more confident and wiser leader.
