You shouldn't count on a journalist to explore a subject as thoroughly as a researcher would. Journalists typically only have room to write the bare minimum of facts. A scholarly journal is shorter than even a long feature article. 1 Per Jamie McIntyre, be prepared for a journalist's ignorance of your field of study or of religion in general. Within a five-year period, a journalist may change from covering academia to covering commerce to covering religious practices. 2 A journalist won't show you the article before it is published, so don't anticipate that. The expectation to review a story is seen by journalists as an infringement on press freedom because news deadlines typically prevent it from happening. 3 Make sure you feel at ease answering questions on the spot before consenting to a live interview.
