  1. GAPSTED WINES Producing Excellent Wines

  2. Australia has a rich history of wine- making tradition which flows down from one generation to another. The new entrants in the field have to be really skilled to make a mark with their innovation and creativity. It was one such endeavour of the 7 wine making families that resulted in the creation of Gapsted wines in 1996.

  3. The promoters of Gapsted wines had just one aim to make ‘excellent wines’ when they joined hands. They decided to set up the winery in the picturesque Alpine Valley and King Valley wine regions of Australia. Both of these lie in a wine region within the larger North East Victoria region and has been identified as a geographical indicator region by the government.

  4. What makes this region suitable for practising viticulture is its cool climate with alpine breezes, morning fogs, clear skies, fresh water availability in abundance and high rainfall. As the region is situated at a higher altitude, there are cooler climes which is very important factor in the production of premium grape varieties. The valleys are governed by cool air which provides natural air conditioning to the vines.

  5. Since the aim was to create excellent wines, the choice of region was a significant factor for producing top quality grapes of both red and white types. The winery today produces shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, riesling, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. The King Valley vineyard is the larger of the two and it produces more than 15000 tonnes of grapes as against 7500 tonnes of grapes produced in Alpine Valleys. The area of King Valley vineyard is more than 1500 hectares whereas that of the Alpine Valley is more than 500 hectare, making the former at least three times larger than the latter. However, it is the Alpine Valleys vineyard which lies at a higher altitude than the King Valley one, which makes it more important from the perspective of having quality fruit.
