  1. 5 Serverless Frameworks to get you started with Serverless Computing 5 Serverless Frameworks to get you started with Serverless Computing Cloud has emerged at such a rapid pace that we keep wondering what next to SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), DaaS (Database as a Service) and FaaS (Function as a Service). The growth has been phenomenal, which is why Cloud is often touted as the technology of decade. Talking of FaaS, it is also known as Serverless Computing and, in our last blog, we explored the reason for it to be getting so popular. Serverless Computing supports the pay as you go feature, which is why it is a highly cost-effective and smart management of server resources. You also spend less time on ops and lessen your infrastructure costs dramatically. While there is no doubt that it is fast becoming popular, what are the Serverless Frameworks available if an organization wishes to adopt it? When the Serverless framework is invoked by external events, it triggers autonomous code snippets, which are loosely coupled. Each code snippet is meant to perform one task at one time. The serverless framework recalls the code snippets at runtime. Serverless Frameworks help to promote the NoOps model. Lambda is also known as an extremely flexible framework. It has an interactive console and command line tools that enables faster uploading and management of snippet. It supports Node.js, Python and Java technologies. It is closely integrated with Alexa, which is one of the biggest reasons that it is a preferred platform when developers wish to use voice-activated applications for Amazon Echo.

  2. 2.Google Cloud Functions When we talk of microservices, no one can beat Google. It drives Kubernetes and runs on its own public cloud infrastructure. Google Cloud Functions have been introduced as containers and run on Google Compute Engine. At present, it only supports Node.js but is expected to support many other languages in the near future. There are a few services like Google Cloud Pub/ Sub and Google Cloud Storage that are integrated with Cloud functions. Since Google APIs have a wide reach, it can support Google Maps, Cloud Messaging and Gmail. 3.IBM OpenWhisk It is one of the best known alternatives to AWS Lambda. It supports Node.js and Swift, and is likely to support other languages in the future. One of the key features of IBM OpenWhisk is that coders can install it on their local machine (that run on Ubuntu). Integrated with IBM Bluemix, its PaaS environment is enabled by CloudFoundry. In case of Windows and Mac OS X programmers, the framework gets up and running with the installation of a Vagrant box. 4.Iron.io Iron.io was initially known as managed platform in the public cloud. The idea to develop it in early days was to encourage programmers to develop code and run it on Iron.io. It has evolved, over the years, to offer cohesive micro-services and adopting Docker. In order to avoid any controversy with AWS Lambda, Iron.io has cross integration with it. Project Kratos is the name of the serverless computing framework from Iron.io. 5.Fission Fission is a framework for serverless functions on Kubernetes. With just one command, it allows an immediate deployment of functions. It also allows programmers to write short-lived functions in any coding language and chart them with any event trigger. Fission has an Apache based licence and is built on open source technology. Since it is built on open source, it supports C#, PHP, NodeJS, Python, and Go. It lessens the work of developers for strata and Kubernetes. We have listed the most critical open source frameworks for serverless computing above.
